For the Role of an Abortionist Shaman, Atiqah Hasiholan Seeks Knowledge About Black Magic and Terrifying Rituals

Atiqah Hasiholan once again proves her acting quality through the horror film KAMPUNG JABANG MAYIT: RITUAL MAUT. This time, she plays a terrifying character named Nyi Itoh, an abortionist shaman who practices mysticism for power.

This project becomes a new experience for Atiqah, who has rarely been involved in horror genre films. Challenges arise from the very complex and dark role.

"The role of Nyi Itoh is that she is an abortionist shaman. From the village of Rangkaspuna. She deceives the people around her to make sacrifices for a better life purpose," said Atiqah when met in the Mega Kuningan area, South Jakarta, on Friday (20/6/2025).

Not only acting, Atiqah had to learn dance and rituals to build the character of Nyi Itoh. Even without the mantra dialogue, she still underwent various special workshops.

"Here, there aren't any mantras to read. There isn't a specific mantra that must be memorized. But it's more about rituals or dances. But that was done through workshops," she explained.

As part of her preparation, Atiqah dug into information about the world of shamanism and black magic practices that are the background of Nyi Itoh. She admitted that she had never been interested before.

"Of course. All this time, I had no interest in finding out, then I researched and watched on YouTube, it turns out that shamans take from the lives of people regarding mysticism in Indonesia, including consuming fetal remains," she said.

This is done so that Atiqah can delve deeper into the psychology of her character. She is also trying to find out the reasons why the character Nyi Itoh chooses the dark path as a shaman.

"Because there is a background as to why Nyi Itoh chose to become a shaman," said the 43-year-old actress.

One of the hardest scenes is when her character has to eat a fetus. Although it is just acting, the scene still makes her feel nauseous. "The hardest part is eating a baby fetus even though I vomit a little," she honestly revealed.

As the lead actress, Atiqah feels challenged to give her best performance. Moreover, she is aware that horror films are increasingly popular with better quality. "Besides, the quality of horror films is getting better and it's rare to act in horror films," she said.

The film Kampung Jabang Mayit: Ritual Maut will be released on July 24, 2025, and is directed by Wisnu Surya Pratamadi along with a local production house.
