Indonesia is currently happy. Two national daughters, Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu, have brought home the gold medal in the women's doubles badminton event at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. Greysia and Apriyani have shown extraordinary performance in this Olympics.
Behind their success, there is definitely a coach. And that coach is Eng Hian. Let's get to know a little about Greysia and Apriyani's coach!
Since 2017, Greysia Polii and Apriyani Rahayu have been coached by Eng Hian. From the beginning, they immediately clicked and gave confidence that they would become a great pair.
Before partnering with Apriyani, Greysia was trained by Eng Hian when she was paired with Nitya Krishinda Maheswari. Under Eng Hian's coaching, Greysia and Nitya once ranked 2nd in the world and won gold at the Asian Games in Incheon.
After Nitya withdrew due to injury, Eng Hian paired Greysia with Apriyani, who is eleven years younger than Greysia. They also became champions in India, Thailand, and others.
Eng Hian himself is a former badminton player in the men's doubles category. He retired from the badminton world in 2006 and started coaching the national training center since 2014.
As a player, Eng Hian once won a bronze medal at the Athens Olympics. He was partnered with Flandy Limpele at that time. Interestingly, Flandy is now a coach for the men's doubles team of the Malaysian badminton team.
Now as a coach, Eng Hian has successfully guided Greysia and Apriyani to win gold at the Olympics. Both of them are grateful to the coach.
In his personal life, Eng Hian has a happy family. His wife, Mulyaningsih Baiin, is someone who also influences his career as a coach. He often discusses everything, including badminton, with his wife.
Eng Hian and his wife have been blessed with two children, Queency and Kingston. Both of their children also provide full support to their father's career.
