His Son Was Arrested During a Protest at the DPR Until His Nose Was Broken, Machica Mochtar: He is a True Activist

Senior artist Machica Mochtar is currently overwhelmed with anxiety. Her only son, Iqbal Ramadhan, was reported to have been involved in a protest against the Revision of the Regional Election Law at the DPR/MPR RI building yesterday. This news made Machica feel very worried and restless.

"Actually, this is very concerning for me because I am a mother, and Iqbal is my only son, then I hear he is detained, my body feels weak and I can't describe it," said Machica Mochtar in Bintaro, South Tangerang, Friday (23/8/2024).

In the latest update, Iqbal has met with Machica. Here is Machica's complete statement regarding the incident that befell her son.

"He said his nose was broken. But, he still tried to be strong. He said, 'I am a man, a man must be strong.' But, I still worry, I can't calm down until now," said Machica.

Machica said that before the demonstration, Iqbal had reminded his mother not to leave the house.

"In the morning I saw him busy. He said, 'Anyway, today Mom shouldn’t go out, there’s a big demonstration.' I wanted to join, but Iqbal forbade me, saying, 'Mom can't join, just stay at home. This is democracy, it's tough, very tough," he explained.

Machica's worries escalated when she received news in the afternoon that Iqbal had been arrested.

"In the afternoon, I received a phone call from my younger sibling. At that time, I tried to contact Iqbal, but he didn't pick up. I never thought that Iqbal would be arrested. It was only in the evening when I was informed that Iqbal was caught, that I realized, oh yes, my child participated in the demonstration," she said.

Iqbal is known to have been active as an activist since he started college. He pursued his bachelor's degree at Al Azhar University and even served as the Chairman of the Student Executive Board. Machica also acknowledged that it is difficult to restrain her child's immense fighting spirit.

"Iqbal is a true activist. He is always at the forefront during any demonstration. Now, he has completed his master's degree and become a lawyer. He chose to work at LBH (Legal Aid Institute)," said Machica.
