Hotman Paris Considers the 'Cremation Cartel' Practice for Covid-19 Bodies Very Inhumane

His mother passed away but it was difficult to bury her because the cremation cost skyrocketed within days. The victim claimed to have been extorted Rp65 million by the cremation cartel syndicate.

As it is known, the allegation of a Covid-19 cremation cartel was previously revealed by the famous lawyer Hotman Paris Hutapea. They seek profits of up to Rp80 million.

Hotman Paris considers the behavior of the cartel to be very inhumane. He urges the police to thoroughly investigate this case. Not only that, Hotman Paris also asks regional leaders not to hesitate to revoke the business permits of the perpetrators if they are proven to have committed a crime.

In addition, the figure of Jusuf Hamka is currently being widely discussed. The man who is familiarly called Babah Alun also plays a role in fighting against the exploitation of cremation for Covid-19 patients in Jakarta. “If you still have high prices, we will provide it for free,” said Babah Alun to Hotman.

Jusuf, who is the Councilor of Cilincing Crematorium, ordered the crematorium to accept the bodies of Covid-19 patients and collect a low price for cremation services, namely Rp7 million.

Meanwhile, as reported by Liputan6.com, the West Jakarta Metropolitan Police's Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) continues to investigate allegations of increased cremation costs during the Covid-19 pandemic. General Crime Unit Chief of West Jakarta Metropolitan Police's Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) AKP Avrilendi explained that 10 people have been questioned as witnesses in the alleged cremation cartel.

"So far, we have taken statements from 10 people," he said when contacted on Wednesday (July 28, 2021).

Avrilendi explained that investigators are still studying the evidence to find criminal acts that have been violated. According to him, so far no one has felt disadvantaged regarding the increase in cremation prices, including Martin himself.
