Gaara is a member of the Sabaku clan from the Sand Village (Sunagakure), and he is the Jinchuriki of Shukaku, the One-Tailed Beast (Ichibi). As a Jinchuriki, Gaara was envisioned by his father to be a powerful weapon for his village.
Gaara is the youngest child of three siblings. He has two older siblings, namely Temari and Kankuro. The three siblings have different elemental powers. Gaara is very skilled in mastering, controlling, and even manipulating sand.
Gaara was born prematurely. While in the womb, Gaara had already become the Jinchuriki of Shukaku and often went on rampages, causing his mother to feel pain frequently. When Gaara was born, shortly after, his mother passed away.

The owner of the full name Sabaku no Gaara became the fifth Kazekage or Godaime Kazekage in Sunagakure. Gaara became the youngest kage in history. At the time of his inauguration, he was still a teenager.
The area around Gaara's eyes appears very dark. Masashi mentioned that it is not a character design or makeup, but indeed Gaara has struggled with insomnia for a long time. This is due to the power of Shukaku that keeps him awake every night.
