'KUNG FU SOCCER' by Stephen Chow Will Soon Arrive, Continuing the Success of 'SHAOLIN SOCCER'

Kapanlagi.com - After a long wait, the latest film directed by Stephen Chow has finally revealed its release schedule. Kung Fu Soccer is set to start showing in cinemas in China on July 11, 2026, just a few days before the FIFA World Cup 2026 final takes place.

The announcement was made alongside the release of a short 21-second teaser and the start of ticket sales. The timing of its release is considered very appropriate as public interest in soccer is at its peak due to the ongoing World Cup event.

For Stephen Chow, this project marks a reunion with the genre that once brought him to the international stage through Shaolin Soccer, a film that combines martial arts action and soccer with his signature comedic touch.

1. Carry the Struggle of the Women's Soccer Team

Unlike Shaolin Soccer, this time Stephen Chow presents a story centered around a women's soccer team. In Mandarin, the film is even known as Kung Fu Woman Soccer.

The plot follows the struggles of the Emei Women's Soccer Team, led by their captain and main striker. Together with their coach, this underestimated team strives to break through the competition and pursue the championship title in the Supreme Invincible Cup tournament.

In addition to being the main producer through his production company, Star Overseas, Stephen Chow also co-wrote the film's script.

2. Star-Studded Asian Cast

This film is bolstered by a lineup of renowned actors and actresses. Zhang Xiaofei, Dilraba Dilmurat, and Lay Zhang Yixing are trusted to play the main roles.

Special appearances also come from Carina Lau and Japanese actor Takeru Satoh. Meanwhile, former soccer player Zhao Lina, rapper MC Jin, Louis Cheung, and Jimmy O. Yang also make guest appearances.

The film's distribution in mainland China will be handled by Maoyan Entertainment.

3. Ready to Follow to Singapore

The name Stephen Chow has long been synonymous with successful comedy films at the box office. In addition to Shaolin Soccer, he is also known for Kung Fu Hustle, CJ7, and The Mermaid.

Specifically for Kung Fu Hustle, the film was produced in collaboration with Columbia Pictures and is said to have grossed over US$100 million or around Rp1.63 trillion (assuming an exchange rate of Rp16,300 per US dollar) worldwide.

For the international market outside of China, the distribution rights for Kung Fu Soccer are held by Encore Films. The Singapore-based company has also confirmed that the film will begin screening in Singapore on August 6, 2026, coinciding with the long weekend celebration of the country's National Day.

Previously, Encore Films also handled the international distribution of several popular Chinese animated films such as Ne Zha 2 and The Legend of Hei 2. With the combination of the big name Stephen Chow, the football theme, and the momentum of the World Cup, Kung Fu Soccer is predicted to be one of the most anticipated Asian films this year.
