Marcell Darwin's Process of Becoming a Convert, Not Witnessed by Mama and Almost Wanted to Add the Name 'Muhammad'

Aa Reza, the cleric who converted Marcell, shared the story of the actor's conversion when met in the Dharmawangsa area, South Jakarta, on Sunday (12/1/2019). It turns out Marcell has been a Muslim for two months now.

"Because it was his desire, Marcell's desire to enter Islam. Accompanied by Nabila. Maybe he was also secretive. He only wanted to embrace Islam. Not because he wanted to get married or anything. But it's because of his awareness of wanting to get married. Because his father is also a Muslim, his brother is also a Muslim. So this family is a multi-religious family. Various religions," explained Aa Reza.

1. Mama Marcell Darwin Has Given Permission

Aa Reza advised Nabila, who converted to Islam before Marcell, to guide him. He then shared the process of Marcell reciting the shahada and who witnessed it.

"At my house, it was witnessed by the administrators of our mosque as well. Then, a certificate was given to him for his identity. Marcell's father has passed away, so only his mother remains. His mother is not present, but she has given permission. When I went to Aa's house, Aa also asked, 'Mama, how is she?' 'Mama has given permission.' That's the advantage for Marcell, right? His sins are gone. As for us, we still have many sins," said Aa Reza.

2. Not Changing the Name

After Marcell converted to Islam, the main message given by Aa Reza was to maintain prayer. He also asked Marcell to set a good example as an imam for his future wife and children. Aa Reza then said that Marcell smoothly recited the shahada and had no intention of changing his name.

"Alhamdulillah. Aa practiced it first, how it started, and then he recited it smoothly and embraced Islam. His name remains Marcell Darwin. Because it's fine. It's also cool to have a Western name but still be a Muslim. Initially, he wanted to add Muhammad and other things, but he didn't. So, his name changes in his heart only," said Aa Reza.

3. Aa Reza's Message

Aa Reza has also given advice to Marcell and Nabilah about how to practice religious rituals within a household. He gave this guidance when they were not yet officially married.

"Yes, the advice is to perfect the religious rituals within the household, starting with a good intention for Allah. Knowledge of religion is necessary, followed by patience and sincerity," concluded Aa Reza.
