Nunung Becomes Therapy for Mpok Alpa While Fighting Her Chemotherapy Pain: If You Stay Silent, the Pain Continues

Nunung reveals one of the secrets behind Mpok Alpa's strength while fighting breast cancer. Just like her, Mpok Alpa chooses to remain active at work even though she has to endure excruciating pain from chemotherapy.

Nunung describes chemotherapy as a process of injecting poison into the body, the effects of which can be felt down to the bones. According to her, the pain caused is truly unbearable and attacks the entire body.

"Chemotherapy is poison, right? It gets put into our bodies. The healthy ones get affected too, and if they undergo chemotherapy, they just stay still, not going anywhere. The healthy ones, for me, I used to attack the bones. To the bones, it hurts a lot, that's it," said Nunung when met in the Tendean area, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (19/8/2025).

Even so, she admitted that she still forced herself to work while undergoing chemotherapy, just like what Mpok Alpa did. She recalled how she took on a job during Ramadan for sahur and breaking the fast programs.

"It's okay, I also work. During my first chemotherapy, I worked, took a program for a month, at Vincent Desta's place. During Ramadan, it was a month of breaking the fast together at Vincent Desta's place, and sometimes I took sahur at Trans7," she said.

For Nunung and Mpok Alpa, working serves as a kind of therapy to distract their minds from the constant pain that torments them. By keeping themselves busy, they can go home feeling tired and go straight to sleep, which they say is the only "medicine" when the chemo effects hit.

"If we don't keep ourselves busy, we feel pain all the time. Because (when working) we come home sleepy and sleep. The only medicine for chemo is just sleep. When we are happy, we enjoy meeting anyone. But once we get home in the car, we are already in pain," he explained.

He also explained the cycle of pain experienced by cancer fighters. The effects of chemotherapy usually only start to be felt a few days after treatment and continue until the next chemo schedule arrives.

"Chemotherapy is after we undergo chemotherapy, 3 days later I feel sick and it keeps hurting. I have chemotherapy every 3 weeks, then 2 days later I feel good and have chemotherapy again. So that's how it is, chemotherapy is always painful, there's no time when it doesn't hurt. It hurts all the time," he concluded.
