Pak Tarno's Struggle to Make a Living After a Stroke, Selling Toys Even with a Cane

The physical limitations due to a stroke attack do not dampen Pak Tarno's spirit to keep earning a living. Although his speech is still not fluent and his steps are still unsteady, this magician who once went viral is still actively selling children's toys to meet daily living needs with his wife.

Every week, Pak Tarno has a pretty tight schedule to sell his goods at several crowded spots. He no longer relies on a big magic stage, but instead goes directly to the streets to ensure that the smoke from his kitchen continues to rise despite his health condition not yet recovering.

"Still selling from Monday to Friday. Saturday and Sunday are off. In the afternoon at Kota Tua, at night performing magic at the night market," said Lisa Karlina when met at her home in the Warakas area, North Jakarta, on Friday (10/4/2026).

This selling activity is carried out by Pak Tarno with the help of a walking aid. Previously, he was reported to only be able to sit in a wheelchair, but now Pak Tarno is starting to dare to use a cane to walk, while his wheelchair has been repurposed as a place to carry merchandise.

"In the afternoon at Kota Tua, at night moving to the night market, performing magic. Many people buy, thousands of them," said Pak Tarno.

Lisa Karlina explained that her husband no longer goes around to schools like he used to. Pak Tarno prefers to stay in a busy location or occasionally move to places that are frequently visited by people if he feels his merchandise is still not attracting many buyers.

"No, now I use a cane when I'm outside. The wheelchair is just for storing merchandise. No, now I focus on Kota Tua. But sometimes when selling, I like to go far to Kebon Bawang, looking for busy places," explained Lisa Karlina.

While selling, Lisa always faithfully accompanies Pak Tarno to help serve customers while also taking care of her husband's physical condition. Considering Pak Tarno still often has difficulty communicating, Lisa's presence is crucial in assisting the transaction process of selling toys. "Yes, I accompany him," said Lisa.

Even though he has to travel quite a distance and work until late at the night market, Pak Tarno does not seem to show any signs of fatigue. For him, being able to interact with many people and perform simple magic tricks in between selling is a happiness of its own during his recovery. "I use a cane, the wheelchair is for storing goods," concluded Pak Tarno.
