Popular Japanese Horror Mangaka, Kazuo Umezu Passes Away at Age 88 Due to Cancer

Kazuo Umezu fainted at his home in Kichijoji, Tokyo in July 2024. Shortly after, he was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer. Umezu refused to undergo surgery and ultimately received palliative care at a nursing home in Tokyo.

Kazuo Umezu expressed his desire to continue creating despite his condition. "Humans will not be defeated by machines. I am working on a story that will not be outdone by computers. Once I am better, I will draw this story," he stated during a visit from a journalist.

3. Establishing the UMEZZ Foundation

Despite his deteriorating health, Kazuo Umezu continues to manage and oversee his copyrights by establishing the UMEZZ Foundation. He ensures that his works will be preserved for future generations.

4. Passing Away Peacefully

Kazuo Umezu refused injections or infusions because he had a low tolerance for pain. Umezu relied solely on medications that drastically worsened his condition in October.

The representative director of the UMEZZ Foundation, Yusuke Ueno, accompanied Umezu in his final days. He recounted that Umezu requested onigiri rice balls and his favorite energy drink before he left the world peacefully and quietly. "His expression was very peaceful. It was very sudden, but exactly as he wished. Umezu wanted to go as if he were just falling asleep," explained Yusuke Ueno.
