Robi Navicula Tells the Story of How He Started Learning Guitar from a Thug at the Neighborhood Watch Post

The vocalist of the grunge band from Bali, Robi Navicula recounts his unique experience when he first learned to play the guitar. Unlike musicians who pursue formal education, Robi actually gained his basic knowledge from the hangout environment at a neighborhood watch post.

This moment occurred in the early 90s when rock music was booming. Robi recalls how a figure he refers to as a thug became his first teacher in learning simple guitar chords.

"The year '92-'93, around that time. So, junior high school. I learned in a neighborhood watch post, my guitar teacher was a thug, from the hangout, right," said Robi during a chat with a Kapanlagi.com reporter recently.

Although he learned from the street environment, the songs he studied were worldwide hits of their time. Robi tried to play legendary works from Guns N' Roses to Nirvana, which only required mastering simple chords to perform. "Oh, I can't remember, the first song I could play was 'November Rain' by Guns N' Roses and Nirvana's 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. Four chords, three chords," he said.

Robi's biggest motivation to form a band came after he watched Nirvana's music video titled "Smells Like Teen Spirit". He felt a connection between Kurt Cobain's nonchalant performance and his lifestyle at that time.

Robi feels that grunge music offers hope to anyone, including those considered "bums", to create and succeed. Since then, he has made a firm decision to pursue the world of music professionally, regardless of the final outcome. "I learned guitar because I honestly wanted to start a band. I learned to play guitar because I liked it, but I wanted to start a band because I watched 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' by Nirvana," he said.

"Wow, where did this bum come from that he can start a band? If he can start a band like this, then I can too. He can do it with just four chords, three chords. Wow, it turns out that inspired me; they played a role in making me want to start a band," he continued.

His love for music has continued to grow over time. For him, playing music has become a deep passion that he will pursue throughout his life, regardless of the level of popularity he may achieve later.

"Because I've always had a deep passion for music, I've really been into music as a hobby. And whether I become famous or not, successful or not, I will continue to play music. Thankfully, I am now earning from music," concluded Robi.
