When asked, he admitted that he has been in love with the underwater world for more than a decade. He even holds an advanced license obtained through a series of tough exams.

"It’s been more than 10 years. I’ve liked diving. That’s why I love diving. It’s the only thing that makes it worthwhile because diving has many challenges. First, we have to be stable, and our breathing has to be good, and calm," said Ruben Onsu when met at Ancol, North Jakarta, on Wednesday (13/8/2025).

He admitted that he has often practiced with a professional who happens to work at Sea World Ancol. This makes it easier for him to adapt to the giant aquarium environment.

"Coincidentally, I usually dive with my friend Fery, right? Well, he’s at Sea World. So, Mas Feri, when I’m diving, he also trains me. So it’s easy to balance it out," he said.

3. Unforgettable Experience

One of the unforgettable experiences was when obtaining a license for night diving. According to him, the challenge was extraordinary because he had to fight against the waves and strong currents in the darkness.

"Before I took the advanced course in Tulamben, Bali, there was one requirement to do a night dive. The challenge of night diving is extraordinary. We have to dive at night when the waves are incredibly strong, and the currents are intense, but my night dive, I completed in Karimun Jawa," said Ruben.

4. Reasons for Falling in Love with Diving

That experience actually made him fall more in love with this extreme sport. For him, diving is a way to release stress and find tranquility.

"And at that moment, it really made me love diving even more, during the night dive. You don’t have any emotions, you just dance in the sea water. You just sway in the sea water like that," he said.

5. Flag Bearer at Sea World

Because of his love for it, he immediately felt happy when he received the offer to be the flag bearer at Sea World. Although he is already an expert, he admits that this challenge is really different because of the presence of sharks.

"I'm happy because this is something I also like, diving. But this challenge is not in a big pool, but in a shark pool," concluded Ruben.

6. Preparation Leading Up to the Day

For the smooth execution of the task, this father of three ensures that all preparations are going well, including managing his busy schedule. Ruben admitted that he intentionally cleared his schedule to be able to rest fully before the big day.

"Everything is going smoothly. I just arrived a bit late because I had work matters. Yes, I really wanted to rest for the next two days so that on the 17th everything is okay. By the time it’s the 17th, the nervousness is already double nervous, right? So I want to make sure I get enough sleep on the 16th, because on the 17th we have to be here early in the morning," said Ruben Onsu.

7. A Tribute for Indonesia

Receiving this special task, the versatile presenter referred to it as a small tribute from himself to Indonesia. Ruben feels proud to be able to contribute to the independence celebration in his own way.

"For me, I am just a small part of the fighters who have fought for Indonesia and this is me along with friends from Sea World creating something as a tribute for Indonesia in our own way," said Ruben.
