Denny Sumargo is trusted to portray boxing legend Ellyas Pical in a biopic series titled ELLYAS PICAL directed by Herwin Novianto. When he first received the offer to be involved, Denny actually rejected it. Why?
"When I was first offered, I refused. I said, 'It will ruin my career'. Because Ellyas Pical is not just any role, he has a great history and is a resurgence of boxing in Indonesia, even the world," he said.
"Maybe Gen Z doesn't know much, but they will get to know this figure through a series and I don't want to ruin that character," said Denny when met in Duren Tiga, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (12/3/2024).
Falcon Pictures, as the production house that initiated the ELLYAS PICAL series, was fortunate enough to convince Denny Sumargo to get involved.
Moreover, Denny felt that his prayers guided him to accept the offer that came.
"Because I thought that if Falcon already felt confident, I also didn't want to then not be able to accept that challenge. So I prayed, 'God, if it is God's will for me to play such a big character, then make it happen,'" Denny explained.
"If not, then don't make it happen. Don't let this series become lifeless when I am in it.' And in the end, it all comes down to my joining this project," he continued.
In the same opportunity, Herwin Novianto as the director explained the reason why choosing Denny Sumargo to be Ellyas Pical even though physically they are not the same.
Apparently, it is because of Denny's background as a former basketball athlete.
"Why did we choose Denny Sumargo? Maybe all actors can play as Ellyas Pical, but only Denny has the experience as an athlete, that's what we're looking for. Not all actors can feel the ups and downs of an athlete and that's in Denny. The result is satisfying," said Herwin firmly.
