Kapanlagi.com - A video of Gus Miftah's sermon at the Magelang Bersholawat event went viral after a clip of his remarks to an iced tea seller spread widely on social media. In the video, Gus Miftah appears to make a joke using coarse language that sparked controversy.
The Gerindra Party responded to the video by asking Gus Miftah to apologize to the iced tea seller who was the object of the joke. According to Gerindra, what Gus Miftah did was not in line with the values taught by the Chairman of Gerindra, Prabowo Subianto.
This statement has garnered public attention, especially after the official Gerindra account posted a video showing Prabowo respecting small traders such as online motorcycle taxi drivers, street vendors, and meatball sellers, as a form of respect for those who work hard for their families.

Gus Miftah's sermon at the Magelang Bersholawat event held at Drh. Soepardi Field, Mungkid City, Magelang Regency, on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, attracted public attention after a clip of the video went viral on social media.
In the 2-minute and 19-second video uploaded by the Twitter account @pelangi77__, Gus Miftah can be seen responding to a congregation's request for him to buy out a tea seller's goods in the middle of the crowd. Gus Miftah's joke to the tea seller was heard using coarse Javanese language.
“Is your tea a lot? Then just sell it, you fool,” said Gus Miftah, continuing, “Sell it first, if it doesn’t sell later, it’s fate.” The joke elicited laughter from the audience, including the prominent figures on stage.
However, many netizens felt that the statement was inappropriate, especially in the context of preaching, which should convey a positive message.

Through the official Instagram account @gerindra, the Gerindra Party requested Gus Miftah to apologize to the ice seller who became the subject of the joke. In their post, Gerindra conveyed the message with great humility.
“With all due humility, we ask Gus @gusmiftah to apologize to Mr. Ice Seller. What Gus did is not in accordance with what Mr. @Prabowo wants and teaches. Thank you,” the account wrote.
The post was also accompanied by a video featuring Prabowo Subianto speaking about the importance of respecting small communities such as street vendors, online motorcycle taxi drivers, and meatball sellers.
“I have great respect for street vendors, for ojol drivers, for meatball sellers. They go out every day, sweat, and work hard to provide for their children and wives. That is what we respect,” said Prabowo in the video.

This controversy has also sparked criticism towards Gus Miftah, who is currently serving as the Special Envoy of the President for Religious Harmony and Religious Facility Development. The public questions the ethics in the preaching delivered with coarse jokes.
Although some attendees at the event laughed, many felt that the jokes demeaned the dignity of small traders. Moreover, Gus Miftah's position as a religious figure adds a burden of moral responsibility in maintaining his speech.
Meanwhile, Gus Miftah has not yet made an official statement regarding the criticisms directed at him, including the apology requested by the Gerindra Party.
Gerindra believes that Gus Miftah's coarse joke about the ice seller does not reflect the values taught by Prabowo, which is to respect the underprivileged communities such as street vendors and meatball sellers.
In his sermon, Gus Miftah made a joke that was considered coarse towards a tea ice seller while responding to a request from the congregation to buy up the seller's goods.
The responses from netizens varied, but most criticized the joke as inappropriate, especially coming from a religious figure in the context of a religious sermon.
