Kapanlagi.com - Zaskia Adya Mecca shared the news that her child, Kaba, underwent a concha reduction procedure at the hospital. She posted the moment on her personal Instagram, informing about the medical steps taken to address Kaba's long-standing breathing complaints.
In her post, Zaskia also mentioned that this action is the third for her children. Her story then caught the attention of many parents, especially those whose children experience chronic nasal congestion or have a habit of sleeping with their mouths open, which is often considered normal.
Zaskia recounts that initially she did not understand Kaba's breathing issues. After studying further, she realized that the habit of breathing and sleeping with an open mouth, along with snoring at night, was not trivial. According to her, this condition could be improved for the child's quality of life to be more comfortable.
She also explains the triggers of Kaba's breathing problems. Kaba's nasal concha often experiences inflammation due to severe allergies, plus there is a bent bone inside the nose. Therefore, in addition to reducing the concha, the doctor also straightened a bit of the bone inside to improve the airway. Zaskia emphasizes that this action is not related to making the nose more pointed.
"This used to be something I didn't understand, but since I learned, seeing the child with their mouth often open to breathe and sleep, plus snoring, I consider it not normal. There is something that can be fixed for a more comfortable quality of life. Kaba's nasal concha is always inflamed because Kaba is a child with severe allergies, plus the bone inside the nose is bent. So, I also straightened it a bit for the airway. (There will be no effect on making it more pointed, guys) even though there is a possibility of inflammation again in the future, but since the bent bone has been corrected, insyaa Allah it won't close 100% like before," Zaskia wrote in the caption of her photo post.
According to Zaskia, the konka reduction procedure that Kaba underwent lasted about an hour. The next morning after the procedure, Kaba was allowed to go home to begin the recovery period.
During the first three days post-procedure, Kaba's nose still felt congested, which Zaskia described as part of the natural healing process. After that initial phase, breathing gradually felt easier. Although there is a possibility of inflammation returning later, the improvement in the crooked nasal bone is expected to make the blockage less severe than before.
She added that this procedure was handled by ENT specialist, drg. Fairuz, at Brawijaya Antasari. Zaskia mentioned that the same doctor also performed similar procedures on her other children.
"The procedure took 1 hour, and the next morning he could go home. For 3 days post-reduction, he was still congested due to recovery, but God willing, after that, breathing will be easier. If you want to check initially, you can go to the ENT doctor; all my children have had procedures with @drfairuz_tht at @brawijayaantasari. Thank you, doc! Kaba is currently in the recovery phase," Zaskia concluded.
Within the nasal cavity, there is tissue called concha, a type of cushion that functions to filter, warm, and humidify the air before it enters the lungs. In individuals with severe allergies or recurrent inflammation, the concha can become continuously swollen, narrowing the airway.
Concha reduction is a medical procedure aimed at shrinking the enlarged parts of the concha to restore airway patency. The concha is not completely removed because this tissue is still necessary for normal nasal function, so the procedure only targets the areas that are enlarged.
This procedure is classified as minor and has minimal risks. It is generally performed under anesthesia, takes about an hour, and patients can go home the next day. During the initial recovery period, the first few days may feel congested before breathing becomes easier.
Chronic nasal congestion due to enlarged concha is known as concha hypertrophy. The triggers can include allergies, recurrent infections, or congenital deformities of the nasal bones. If a child frequently breathes through their mouth, snores during sleep, or has a nose that often feels blocked without a clear reason, a visit to an ENT specialist can help identify the cause and treatment options.
