The name of the Indonesian Malay-Dangdut Music Artists Association (PAMMI) has officially changed to the Dangdut Music Artists Association (PAMDI). This is the result of the Extraordinary National Congress (MUNASLUB) of the Central Leadership Council of the Indonesian Malay-Dangdut Music Artists Association (DPP-PAMII) on December 11, 2023, at the Grand Tjokro Grogol Hotel, West Jakarta.

The king of dangdut, Rhoma Irama, who was appointed as the chairman of DPP PAMDI, said that changing PAMMI to PAMDI is part of a series of serious efforts to register dangdut music as intangible cultural heritage to UNESCO.

The name change from PAMMI to PAMDI by removing the word Melayu in the organization is aimed at facilitating the registration process to UNESCO. According to Rhoma Irama, this is to avoid confusion.

"Dangdut has been around since the 70s as a new genre in Indonesia and we are proposing it to be recognized as intangible cultural heritage. Currently, we are waiting for approval to bring it to UNESCO," said Rhoma Irama at Hotel Grand Tjokro Grogol Jakarta Barat, Monday (11/12/2023).

Meanwhile, Nuroji, a member of the DPR from Commission X, appreciates the change of name from PAMMI to PAMDI. According to him, this change will have a positive impact.

"Because if Malay music is not only in Indonesia, but also in Malaysia. But with a focus on dangdut, it only exists in our country," he said.

The Extraordinary National Deliberation of the DPP PAMMI was attended by Regional Leadership Councils from 21 Provinces as participants, including representatives from PAMMI America. The essence of this extraordinary deliberation is to change the name from PAMMI to PAMDI as an urgent interest in continuing the registration of Dangdut as the original world heritage of Indonesia.

In its journey, PAMMI has undergone several name changes, starting from the Indonesian Malay Music Artists Foundation (YAMMI) in 1978, then changing to the Indonesian Malay Music Artists Institute (LAMMI) in 1980.

Then it became the Indonesian Malay Music Artists Association (PAMMI) in 1989, and at the MUNAS in 1994 it changed to the Indonesian Malay-Dangdut Music Artists Association with the same abbreviation PAMMI but with the addition of the word Dangdut. And in this year, PAMMI then changed to PAMDI.

The change of name from PAMMI to PAMDI has also been agreed upon by the founders of PAMMI, namely Mr. Eddie M. Nalapraya, Muchsin Alatas, and of course Rhoma Irama.
