Joey Jordison Former Slipknot Drummer Dies in His Sleep at the Age of 46

From the statement released by Joey Jordison's family, it is known that the musician passed away while sleeping. His family plans to hold a private funeral without media and public attention.

"With deep sorrow, we announce that Joey Jordison, drummer, musician, and artist who has produced many works, passed away peacefully in his sleep on July 26, 2021. Joey's death leaves us with an empty heart and indescribable grief. Anyone who knows Joey understands his intelligence, gentle personality, big heart, and his love for everything about family and music," said the statement from the Jordison family, as reported by Billboard.

"Joey's family requests that friends, fans, and media respect our need for privacy and peace during this very difficult time. The family will hold a private funeral ceremony and asks the media and public to respect their wishes," added the family.

1. Parting Ways with Slipknot

Joey Jordison formed Slipknot in his home country, Iowa, in 1995 with percussionist Shawn Crahan and bassist Paul Gray. In December 2013, Slipknot announced that Jordison and the band had "parted ways" after nearly two decades together.

However, Joey Jordison himself made a different statement. In an interview, the drummer stated that he was fired from Slipknot.

"No band meeting? None. Anything from management? No, nothing," Jordison said in a 2016 interview with Metal Hammer.

"All I got was a stupid email saying that I was out of the band that I worked so hard to build my whole life," he continued.

Jordison formed the band Scar the Martyr in 2013 while still playing with Slipknot. After that, Jordison also briefly played with the band Sinsaenum.

2. Suffering from a Serious Illness

In 2016, Jordison revealed that his departure from the band coincided with his battle with transverse myelitis, a spinal cord inflammation whose exact cause is still unknown.

Jordison claimed that his bandmates misunderstood his medical condition as substance abuse issues. He disclosed that the illness prevented him from playing the drums towards the end of his active career.

"I lost my legs. I can't play [drums] anymore. It's a form of multiple sclerosis, that severe," he said on stage at the 2016 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards.

However, to this day, there has been no statement from the family regarding whether Jordison's health condition is related to his death.
