She revealed that the use of that makeup caused acne and other skin issues, requiring some scenes to be shot in a way that avoided showing her face.
"In the end, when they were shooting my skirt at the beginning of the credit scene, and there were some palm trees around it and they shot all the long lenses from below, it was because my face was such a mess. At that point, they could no longer highlight my face," explained Margaret while being a guest on the 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast, Monday (01/13/2025), as reported by Just Jared.
After a year, Qualley reported that her skin finally started to recover. She emphasized the importance of proper skincare after being exposed to heavy makeup, which often clogs pores and causes irritation.
"So there's a character that has that much acne, it's really acne from wearing prosthetics (which were used in 'The Substance'). So I thought to myself, 'Oh this is perfect. I'm playing all these different characters - one of them is wearing my own acne-covered face,'" said Margaret Qualley.
To get rid of acne, Margaret Qualley needed quite a long time to make her facial skin smooth again.
"It probably took a year to physically recover from all of that," she concluded.
