Europe on Screen Festival 2024 Will Soon Be Present, Featuring 75 Films from 28 European Countries!

Kapanlagi.com - Europe on Screen (EoS) Festival will be held in Indonesia again, precisely from 7 to 16 June 2024. This film festival featuring European films will present 75 latest European films for free in eight cities in Indonesia, namely Jakarta, Bandung, Denpasar, Malang, Medan, Sidoarjo, Surabaya, and Yogyakarta.

"We see the increasing enthusiasm of the Indonesian people for Europe on Screen with the beginning of requests to hold this festival in their cities. That is why we added two new cities, namely Malang and Sidoarjo, making a total of eight cities in EoS 2024. In addition, we will present films from 28 European countries, including three countries participating for the first time in this festival, namely Cyprus, Lithuania, and Georgia," said Mr. Denis Chaibi, the European Union Ambassador to Indonesia.

This year's event is the 24th edition, confirming EoS as the longest-running international film festival in Indonesia. In addition to screening films from European countries, EoS 2024 also showcases Indonesian short films and Indonesian films shot in Europe in the On Location program, as well as other activities related to the European and Indonesian film industry.

1. Films Screened at Europe on Screen 2024

Chicken for Linda! (France, 2023), an animated comedy film by Sébastien Laudenbach and Chiara Malta, was selected as the opening film of EoS 2024. This film won the Best Feature award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival 2023 and the Meilleur film d'animation at the César Awards 2023, as well as a nomination for Best Animated Feature at the Ottawa International Animation Festival 2023.

Meanwhile, the film Every You Every Me (Germany, 2024) by Michael Fetter Nathansky was chosen as the closing film of EoS 2024. This romantic fantasy film was first screened at the Panorama Berlin International Film Festival 2024 and received a nomination for Best Cinematography Feature Film at the Deutscher Kamerapreis 2024.

Nauval Yazid, Festival Co-Director of EoS 2024, explained the selection of films screened at EoS 2024. "As a film festival held in the middle of the year, coinciding with school holidays, we present a variety of films at EoS 24. There are animated comedies that open the festival, followed by romantic comedies, action films, thrillers, documentaries, and exciting European slashers. Our hope is that film lovers of all ages can enjoy the diverse selection of films at this festival, especially since all film screenings are free and open to the public."

2. Short Film Pitching Project (SFPP)

As a form of contribution from EoS 2024 to the Indonesian film industry and bridging the European and Indonesian film industries, EoS 2024 holds the Short Film Pitching Project (SFPP) program where the winners will receive partial funding for their film production.

"This year we received 197 registrations from various regions in Indonesia, from Medan, Pontianak, Denpasar, to Kupang. The SFPP program by EoS, which has been running for six years, has produced dozens of short films that have been screened not only at EoS but also at local and international film festivals. At EoS 2024, we will also premiere the winning short films from SFPP 2023, which come from East Java, Jakarta, and Tangerang," said Meninaputri Wismurti, Festival Co-Director of EoS 2024.

The winners of SFPP EoS 2024 will receive cash and non-cash prizes from EoS 2024, SAE Indonesia, Kemala Home Living, as well as the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology. EoS 2024 will also feature Eamon Little, the screenwriter of the film That They May Face the Rising Sun (2023) from Ireland. He will attend the film screening at EoS 2024 and conduct a scriptwriting workshop in Jakarta, which is open to those interested in learning about scriptwriting for film.

3. Presenting Director Lina Wertmuller

In addition, EoS 2024 also holds a retrospective program of Lina Wertmuller, the legendary Italian director who became the first female director in the world to be nominated for Best Director at the Academy Awards or Oscars in 1977. Lina Wertmuller's classic films such as The Lizards (1963), Swept Away (1974), and Seven Beauties (1975) can be watched in the EoS 2024 Retrospective program, while enjoying an exhibition of her work at the Italian Cultural Institute in Jakarta.

As a warm-up session, the pre-festival program Road to EoS 2024 was held from March to early June 2024, both offline and online. Road to EoS 2024 offline took place in the cities of Surabaya, Yogyakarta, Medan, Bandung, Bekasi, and Jakarta. Meanwhile, the online program was held in the form of Instagram Live conversations and discussions with figures from the Indonesian and European film industry.

The films in EoS 2024 can be watched for free from June 7-16, 2024, at all festival locations by directly coming to the venue. For screenings in Jakarta, viewers can register one hour before the film starts directly at the respective location.
