Film 'DO NOT CALL MOM A INFIDEL' Raises Sensitive Issues, Producer Provides Explanation & Reveals Original Title

Maxima Pictures celebrates their 60th film production by releasing a family drama that raises sensitive issues, DO NOT CALL MOM A INFIDEL. Aware of the potential controversy from its title, the producer, Wilza Lubis, emphasizes the important essence of this film's story.

Wilza stresses that although this film touches on the issue of interfaith marriage, its main focus is not on religious debates. Instead, this film is a portrayal of the strength of family bonds, especially between a mother and child.

"And once again, this is not a religious film in my opinion. This is a film about family, a mother and child who have different beliefs," asserted Wilza Lubis when met at the Gala Premiere XXI Epicentrum, South Jakarta, on Monday (13/10/2025).

This film, inspired by a true story, is intentionally made to be accepted by all circles. Elza G. Dioz, the producer, added that the main message to be conveyed is about acceptance and tolerance within the family context.

"Also, normatively, religion, in Islam, forbids interfaith marriage. However, in everyday life, it cannot be denied that many experience such situations," explained Elza.

Interestingly, the title of this film is not the original title. Initially, this film was planned to be titled JANJI MARIA, in accordance with the promise of the main character to her late husband to raise their child in an Islamic manner.

"The original title was first Janji Maria. Then with other considerations, we changed it again, changed it again," said Wilza.

This film tells the story of Maria (Michelle Ziudith), a Christian mother, who struggles to maintain custody of her daughter from her mother-in-law (Elma Theana) who doubts her ability to raise the child in an Islamic way.
