How Baim Wong Directs Two Down Syndrome Actors in 'EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE'

Baim Wong's latest film, EVERYTHING WILL BE FINE, tells the story of a family with down syndrome. Remarkably, the character Alim is played by Rahmatullah Nan Alim, a person with down syndrome.

Not only Alim, but Baim also successfully invited Vanessa, who in the film's story acts as a classmate. So how does Baim direct these 'special' children? Here are the details.

"At first, it was more about how to do it, because we didn't know their mindset. But after understanding, it became very easy, how we can understand their mood that can make them happy, cry, yes we memorize everything," said Baim during a watch party at Araya XXI Cinema in Malang City, Saturday (16/5).

The presence of Alim and Vanessa in the film motivates that a person with Down syndrome has abilities when given space and opportunity. Alim himself is a person with Down syndrome who works as a barista in a café in Jakarta. For the first time, he has been cast to act in a film alongside several famous stars, such as Reza Rahadian, Christine Hakim, Happy Salma, Raihanun, Luna Maya, Asri Welas, and others. Their acting has received a lot of praise.

"What makes him comfortable on set, we memorize. For example, if he's not in the mood, there’s music that can make him happy, like a bale-bale like that," Baim added, illustrating his experience.

Baim admitted that the film ALL WILL BE FINE was based on the current conditions of society. But in any problematic situation, family is the best place to seek refuge, even the last resort.

"This film is more about family because I no longer have parents. Don't be late to come to the family, because there will definitely come a time when we will be left by our parents. I want my parents, everyone to know that happiness lies in family," said Baim.

The film ALL WILL BE FINE tells the story of a household that is suddenly left by Mentari (Happy Salma), an important figure in the family's environment, forever. The family seems unprepared to face the reality, especially since Mentari also leaves Alim, a boy with Down syndrome. Meanwhile, Ilham (Teuku Rifnu Wikana), the late woman's ex-husband, cannot accept Alim's presence.

Amidst their respective egos, the warm guidance from Mother Wida (Christine Hakim) slowly makes them realize that loss sometimes becomes the only way for a family to find each other again.

"The hope is that going home is to his family, going home is to his mother, to his sister to apologize, to say thank you, to be loved, that is the goal," said Baim.

Baim Wong and Alim attended a screening with individuals with Down syndrome at Plaza Araya Malang. The presence of the two actors was met with cheers and warmth. Baim was showered with hugs repeatedly and received thank yous in their distinctive style.
