1. Synopsis
Susi Susanti, who was 14 years old, already loved badminton and later became a beloved athlete in Indonesia. She was trained by Liang Chiu Sia, played by Jenny Chang, and driven by a promise to her father, Susi gained international recognition after winning the Olympic gold medal for the first time for Indonesia. In addition, this film shows how Susi's struggle from childhood in Tasikmalaya, then training hard at PB Jaya Raya until successfully entering the national training of PBSI. When there was an economic turmoil in Indonesia, Susi took the opportunity to show to her country and the world that heroism is not measured by someone's success, but by the depth of sacrifice.
2. Lift the Inner Struggle
At that time, the situation in Indonesia during the crisis that caused sentiment towards the Chinese descendants was also depicted. As an athlete of Chinese descent, Susi had to be accustomed to accepting racial attitudes from the society. It is also told that when Susi and her friends were in Hong Kong, they had to face discriminatory Indonesian representatives and ambassadors, along with demonstrators who protested in front of the stadium where they competed. It was the toughest challenge experienced by an athlete, where they were pressured domestically while being cornered internationally, certainly not an easy matter.
3. Set Aside the Sweetness of Teenage Love
Behind every bitter struggle, there is always a sweet story in the midst of it. It is also not separated from a love story. In her career journey as an athlete, Susi also met Alan Budikusuma, who is her husband until now. The selection of Laura Basuki and Dion Wiyoko to portray the badminton athlete couple can be considered as the right choice. Because the chemistry built between them looks harmonious, between Susi who is ambitious and very rigid, and Alan who appears more indifferent, calm but actually friendly.
