Terrifying! Review of the Film 'JURNAL RISA' (2024), Rituals and Expulsion of the Astral Figure Samex the Bringer of Disaster

1. Film Review

The film JURNAL RISA brings horror in the form of sacred scenes and terrifying demon expulsion rituals that are presented in a captivating manner, able to evoke a threatening sense of fear while watching. The most tense scene is when Samex challenges again and asks for another life as a stake, with the choice between an animal or a human that must be sacrificed.

During the worship scene, Prinsa Mandagie is given the blood of a freshly killed goat. This scene creates such a realistic atmosphere that it causes a slight feeling of nausea in the audience. This scene also shows the villagers who are possessed as a result of the ritual, hypnotizing the audience with Sundanese music, mantras, and the typical 'anti-immunity' attraction of the regional art.

With a dark and eerie atmosphere and tense audiovisuals, this film presents typical jump scares in Indonesian horror or thriller films. Nevertheless, there are some parts in the plot that feel empty or disconnected, leaving the audience to think hard about what is happening, such as Prinsa's possession scene and her extreme actions without adequate explanation.

Directed by Rizal Mantovani with a mockumentary approach, this film provides an intense and chilling viewing experience, rarely seen in Indonesian films, especially in the horror sub-genre. The audience is immersed deeply into the world of horror through a first-person perspective in handling supernatural events.

2. Terrifying Samex Expulsion Ritual

Samex is Uwa Satirah, he is an entity that instills deep fear in the Risa Journal team and their horror content followers. Uwa Satirah has a historical connection to the continuous disturbances experienced by the Risa family. As a figure involved in black magic practices and deviating from religion, Uwa Satirah has become a viral topic on social media due to its terrifying supernatural effects on anyone who calls its name.

In this film, the character Prinsa Mandagie intentionally mentions the name Samex, making her the primary target of the threatening terror. The situation becomes more tense when Prinsa's behavior starts to change strangely, and she is forced to undergo a ritual. This ritual becomes crucial because Prinsa's life is at stake. Samex refuses to leave Prinsa's body and seems to want to make the human body its dwelling place.

The terror faced not only affects Prinsa but also other members of the Risa Journal team. To handle this situation, they decide to travel to a village that is the origin of Uwa Satirah. There, they try to clean up and perform rituals to expel Samex and end the terror that threatens their lives.

With a deep background and a gripping story, JOURNAL RISA presents an intense horror experience, exploring the tension between the real and the supernatural dimensions, as well as the effort to overcome unexplainable forces with logic.
