The Brave Acting of Atiqah Hasiholan and Ersya Aurelia in KAMPUNG JABANG MAYIT, Raising Issues of Abortion and Black Magic

Two top actresses, Atiqah Hasiholan and Ersya Aurelia, are brought together in the latest horror film titled KAMPUNG JABANG MAYIT. In this film, Atiqah plays a dark character named Nyi Itoh, an abortionist from the village of Rangkaspuna, while Ersya plays Weda, a young model who must face an unwanted pregnancy.

"The role of Nyi Itoh is that she is an abortionist. From the village of Rangkaspuna. She deceives the people around her to make sacrifices for a better life purpose," said Atiqah Hasiholan explaining her dark and complex character when met at KLY Youniverse, Gondangdia, Central Jakarta, recently.

Although there are no special mantra readings, the role of this shaman still requires deep preparation. Atiqah underwent an intensive workshop, discussed with the writer and director, and conducted online research to understand the mystical world she had never delved into before. "But that was done through the workshop, to build the background of Nyi Itoh," she continued.

One of the most challenging scenes is when the character Nyi Itoh has to eat a fetus as part of a black magic ritual. Although it is just acting, this moment is very mentally draining.

"The hardest part is eating the fetus even though I vomited a little," Atiqah candidly revealed, then added, "It's a secret," when asked further about the process.

Atiqah also admitted that she had to open herself up to information about black magic, something that had never interested her before. "Then I looked it up, watched on YouTube, and it turns out that this shaman takes the lives of people related to the occult in Indonesia, including consuming fetal babies," she explained.

Meanwhile, Ersya Aurelia plays Weda, a young model who is rising to fame but has to face the reality that she is pregnant. She is then taken by her boyfriend, Bagas, to the village of Rangkaspuna to undergo an abortion ritual with Nyi Itoh.

"Weda is about 3 or 4 months pregnant. So Weda's goal is indeed to get rid of it, but this life in her womb is given by God," said Ersya, who admitted to delving into her role by imagining carrying life within her during filming.

For research, Ersya consulted with an acting coach and studied the physical symptoms experienced by pregnant women. "What it feels like to have a sore body, what discomfort is like, so I bring my body not just for myself but there is something I need to take care of," she said in conclusion.
