Barney's Childhood Entertainment will be shown on the big screen with an adult audience target

Following the huge success of the film BARBIE, Mattel will release BARNEY on the big screen, targeting adult audiences.Mattel CEO Kevin McKeon revealed that the film BARNEY will address issues faced by adults.McKeon's bold idea has caught the public's attention, especially those whose childhood was accompanied by the show BARNEY & FRIENDS.

In response to public concerns that Mattel will ruin their childhood memories, McKeon stated that the BARNEY film he is working on will not be strange.In an interview with Semafor, McKeon said, “It's still too early to explain it in detail, but what I can tell you is that we are taking a new approach, entertaining and based on culture. It won't be a weird film,” he said.

Just like BARBIE, BARNEY is a popular cartoon character from childhood that still remains in the memories of many viewers who have now grown up. As reported, Mattel will turn the children's series BARNEY into entertainment aimed at adults. McKeon revealed that the BARNEY film will be like an A24 studio adult film with surreal elements and also inspired by films by Charlie Kaufman and Spike Jonze.

Quoted from TheGuardian, McKeon said that this film will not be tailored for children, "We are more focused on depicting the concerns and experiences of millennials in this project rather than presenting it perfectly for children," said McKeon.

McKeon also mentioned that this film will highlight the lives of adults, "Although it is not a film intended for adults, the main focus will be on the challenges and difficulties faced by those in their thirties, with a deeper level of disappointment in that generation, growing up with Barney," he said.

One of Mattel's executives, Robbie Brenner, who successfully produced the Barbie film, revealed the story that will be featured in the Barney film.

In an interview with Variety, Robbie shared new details about the story that the Barney film will highlight, which is about "identity and finding who you love and who feels alienated," Robbie revealed.

2. Daniel Kaluuya as Producer

Daniel Kaluuya, a British actor known for his roles in the films BLACK PANTHER and GET OUT, has been chosen by Mattel as the producer for the film BARNEY. When Mattel announced the plan to make the BARNEY film with Daniel in 2019, Daniel admitted that BARNEY was a beloved character from his childhood. 

“Barney is a figure that exists in many of our childhood memories, then he disappeared into the shadows and left misunderstandings,” said Daniel.
