1. The Director

Originally, this film was supposed to be directed by Scott Derrickson, who directed the first film. However, due to creative differences, Derrickson resigned as director in January 2020. To replace him, Sam Raimi, famous for the film EVIL DEAD and the SPIDER-MAN trilogy, joined in April 2020.

As reported by CBR, Raimi explained his reasons for returning to superhero films after his last film SPIDER-MAN 3 received negative responses, "The internet has grown and people didn't like that film and they definitely let me know about it. So, it was hard to accept it again."

Then he added, "But then, I found out that there was an opening in DOCTOR STRANGE 2. My agent called me and said, 'They are looking for a director at Marvel for this film and your name came up. Are you interested?' And I thought, 'I wonder if I can still do it.' The pressure is immense, a film of that kind. And I thought, 'Well, that's reason enough.'"

2. New Actors and Characters

When it comes to characters, of course Benedict Cumberbatch will reprise his role as the famous sorcerer Dr. Stephen Strange. In addition, Chiwetel Ejiofor will portray Karl Mordo again, Strange's mentor turned enemy in the end of the first film. Benedict Wong, who appeared in SHANG-CHI, will also return as Wong.

Besides the actors reprising their roles, this DR. STRANGE sequel will introduce other important characters, namely Scarlet Witch alias Wanda Maximoff played by Elizabeth Olsen. Although there is still no announcement about the plot of this film, after the trailer shown in theaters, it can be confirmed that Ejiofor's Mordo will be one of the main antagonists continuing from the ending of the first film. Additionally, there is also a character from the comic book, Shuma-Gorath. He is a one-eyed green tentacled monster seen battling Dr. Strange.

The MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS trailer ends with the introduction of an evil alternate version of Doctor Strange. "I hope you understand. The greatest threat to our universe... is you,” those are Mordo's words before Strange encounters his other self.

4. Scariest Marvel Film

In a virtual Q&A hosted by the New York Film Academy, Olsen stated that this film is heading in a darker direction. "This is a very scary film. It's like Sam Raimi back in the day. He's trying to make the scariest Marvel film."

Olsen previously told Glamour UK that Raimi really wanted a crazy horror show vibe, and horror. Writer Waldron, who previously wrote for the LOKI series, also wants to build on what Derrickson created in the first film and push this sequel towards something scarier.

5. Release Date

Like many other films, COVID-19 forced the company to postpone their film release date. The delay forced the crew to resume filming in March 2021, with shooting locations taking place in London, Somerset, and Surrey.

DOCTOR STRANGE IN THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS was previously scheduled for release on March 25, 2022. However, this date was eventually pushed back to May 6, 2022, which was previously the release date for THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER until the film was postponed again.?
