DAMSEL is also directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, who has previously directed the film 28 WEEKS LATER, along with a screenwriter and executive producer, Dan Mazeau, who has worked on the film FAST X.

In an interview at the Netflix Tudum event, Fresnadillo expressed his enthusiasm for working on the film DAMSEL. “It was a very intense journey, so I am very excited to design and develop it. In essence, it is a beautiful story about a teenage princess who becomes a strong, independent, and powerful adult. Elodie doesn't receive any support. It is a real survival experience.” he said.

DAMSEL tells the story of a dutiful and kind-hearted princess named Elodie who marries a handsome prince from a wealthy kingdom named Henry. However, this marriage is not as Elodie imagined after she discovers that the royal family has deceived her and instead made Elodie a sacrifice to an ancient dragon. They present Elodie to a cave where the dragon resides.

The tradition of sacrificing a princess to this ancient dragon has apparently been going on for years to protect the kingdom's people. Princess Elodie, left alone in the cave, must survive on her own relying on her intelligence. This film will present the excitement of tense scenes from Princess Elodie's efforts to survive.

Before its scheduled release in 2024, Netflix collaborated with bestselling author Evelyn Skye to novelize DAMSEL prior to its film release. This idea will be suitable for book lovers to experience the tension of DAMSEL through writing.

Netflix partnered with Random House Worlds, the publisher that released the novel DAMSEL before the film's release. The book was first published on April 18, 2023, with the same synopsis as the film. However, Fresnadillo conveyed that the film and the novel DAMSEL will have slight differences.
