On Point Graphics! Review of Netflix's Latest Live Action Series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' Episode 1

Indonesian viewers must be familiar with the animation series 'Avatar: The Last Airbender'. The film adaptation, starring Gordon Cormier, Dallas Liu, Kiawentiio, Ian Ousley, and others, was first announced through a trailer on Netflix's YouTube channel on November 10, 2023. The good news is that today, on February 22, 2024, the adaptation of this popular cartoon has released its first episode on the Netflix app.

For those who haven't watched it yet, I'll give you a warning that there will be spoilers from the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender episode 1 below.

In the first episode, which lasts for about one hour and thirty minutes, viewers are presented with the ambition of the Fire Nation to conquer the world. Knowing that the last Avatar is from the Air Nation, the Fire Nation starts attacking the Air Nation temple. In the inevitable bloodshed, Aang, who is out searching for air with his flying bison friend Appa, gets caught between the waves and eventually drowns. In order to save himself and his friend, Aang freezes them both.

After 100 years, the point of view shifts to two siblings from the Water Nation, Katara and Sokka. When they were traveling at sea, they accidentally saved Aang, who is an Avatar. This is the figure that the Fire Nation is looking for so that their goal of conquering the world can go smoothly.

Disclaimer for readers that this is purely the personal opinion of the writer, ya. According to mimin, well, after previously Netflix successfully made a popular live-action adaptation of One Piece, this time they also succeeded in meeting mimin's expectations as an animation adaptation lover.

During the one-hour plus duration of the show, mimin was amazed by the smooth and flawless choreography played by the actors. Not to mention the selection of actors that according to mimin is very suitable for their roles. Moreover, the CGI effects used such as flying bison, background settings, and the elements of fire, water, earth, and air look very realistic! Also, the story that still follows without eliminating the original essence of the plot becomes a plus point for this series.

Compared to the live-action The Last Airbender released in 2010, from the CGI effects, choreography, and costumes have been greatly upgraded.

Moreover, considering the difference in duration between the old adaptation which is only about one hour and forty-three minutes, while the latest adaptation can touch a total of eight hours, making this Avatar story more complete.

Although mimin certainly has some points that mimin doesn't like. Aang's portrayal in some early scenes looks a bit stiff and his speech seems rushed. Despite that, mimin really likes the whole film series. Can't wait for episode 2!

Synopsis This story tells about a little boy named Aang (Gordon Cormier) who is the reincarnation of the previous Avatar.

The Avatar itself is a figure who can control the four elements of life: water, earth, fire, and air. Therefore, they are called as the symbol of world balance.

In the past, every nation lived side by side because the Avatars maintained the balance between the elemental nations. However, everything changed when the fire nation attacked. Only the Avatar can stop the cruelty of the firebenders, but when the world needed him, he disappeared.

Then, a prophecy emerged that the glory of the fire nation would be subdued by the Avatar who can master all elements. That figure is Aang, the last hope and the last Avatar who can control the four elements of life.

One day, Katara (Kiawentiio Tarbell) and Sokka (Dallas Liu) found a frozen boy in the water tribe area. After they saved the boy, they just found out that he is an Avatar.

Aang, together with Sokka and Katara who have saved him, starts to explore the world to learn to master the four elements and stop the tyranny of the fire nation.
