'SNOW WHITE' Live Action Becomes Disney's Lowest Remake Film, Faces Sharp Criticism From Film Critics

During its opening weekend, SNOW WHITE managed to secure the top spot at the Box Office in the United States, although it still fell short of expectations.

According to Box Office Mojo, the film grossed approximately US$87.3 million worldwide during its opening weekend, with nearly half of that coming from the United States. With a total production cost of US$270 million, this figure is still far from what was hoped for.

When compared to other Disney live-action films, SNOW WHITE ranks the lowest, below DUMBO (2019), which earned US$45 million on its opening day. However, SNOW WHITE still has the potential to recover slowly, similar to the film MUFASA: THE LION KING, which was released last December, earning US$35 million initially and ultimately grossing US$717.5 million.

1. Received Sharp Criticism From Film Critics

Quoted from the New York Times, Manohla Dargis, the chief film critic of the New York Times, summarized her impression of this film by saying that the film is neither good enough to be admired nor bad enough to be mocked; this mediocre film is one of her biggest disappointments.

Not only that, quoted from Rolling Stone, in his review David Fear mocked this film by writing, "This film is indeed suitable as a bedtime story, as it will surely make you fall asleep."

The chief film critic of The Guardian, Wendy Ide, gave this film one star out of five and called it "very terrible." She stated that this is "a film made by people with cartoonish eyes who have not a shred of art in their souls," and added that it is "an experience akin to watching bamboo splinters under your nails," quoted from Fox News.

2. Harvesting Many Controversies Before the Film Premiere

The film, which tells the story of a princess and seven dwarfs, has attracted the audience's attention since its inception. However, the casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White has already faced protests from fans. This is because the character of Snow White is depicted as a fair-skinned woman with red lips, which is very different from Rachel Zegler, who is of Colombian descent. This also occurred in the live-action film LITTLE MERMAID, where the portrayal of the character did not match the actor.

Not only that, controversies also arose from political comments made by Gal Gadot, who supports Israel, and Rachel Zegler, who appears to support Palestine in the genocide that has claimed many lives. The public views this as inciting conflict between the two actors.
