Kapanlagi.com - Surprising news comes from the legendary singer from South Korea, BoA. On Thursday (17/12/2020), it was reported that BoA was interrogated by prosecutors on the previous day, Wednesday (16/12/2020), on suspicion of smuggling psychotropic drugs including Zolpidem, a drug commonly used to treat sleep problems, from abroad.
As reported by Soompi, BoA received a prescription for psychotropic drugs in Japan through an employee from their agency's branch office. It is described that the drugs were found during a customs search to Korea under the name of a Korean employee.
Prosecutors will decide whether to press charges after considering various factors, one of which is whether they intentionally smuggled the drugs.
After this news circulated, SM Entertainment released a statement confirming that the report referred to BoA. They then explained that this happened due to a staff member's mistake who was unaware of the formal import procedure.
"It is true that employees from the foreign branch sent medicine through the mail without following the official customs procedure. However, they did not intend to bring it illegally; it was a mistake made out of ignorance," said SM Entertainment in their official statement.
The sleep medicine in question was not brought from Japan to Korea without reason. SM Entertainment explained that the artist under their management consumed sleep medicine based on a doctor's prescription for health reasons.
"Recently, BoA underwent a physical examination and the doctor said that she needed enough sleep due to a decrease in growth hormone. Upon the doctor's advice, she received a prescription for sleep medicine. However, she experienced severe side effects such as dizziness and digestive disorders, including vomiting," they explained.
It is stated that the related employee will actively cooperate with the investigation regarding this case. In closing their official statement, SM Entertainment expressed their apology for the arising issues and promised not to repeat them in the future.
"Our company plans to strengthen multi-aspect education for all employees to prevent this from happening again in the future. Once again, we apologize for causing concern," concluded SM Entertainment.
