South Korean actor Jo In Sung shares his views on the melodrama genre that he used to frequently star in. Now, in his mid-40s, he feels he wants to explore characters that depict the human experience more broadly.

As one of the Korean actors known through melodrama projects, Jo In Sung now feels that his contribution to the genre is sufficient.
"In my younger days, I often played in melodramas. I feel that my quota for melodramas has been fulfilled now. This genre has a very repetitive pattern and heavily relies on personal charm, so it can sometimes trap the actor in a sense of self-satisfaction. I want to avoid that and focus more on portraying love itself well," explained the 44-year-old Korean actor.
When praised for being considered to open a new era in the melodrama genre, Jo In Sung humbly dismissed it. He said, "Not to that extent."
Jo In Sung revealed that he feels uncomfortable playing a romance with actresses who have a significant age gap from him.
"Now I am in my mid-40s. To be honest, playing melodrama with a co-star who is 12 years younger feels quite heavy. Indeed, relationships like that exist in the real world, but many are also uncomfortable seeing them. Physically, I have also aged. Romance is still interesting, but now I am more interested in characters that depict a broader human experience," explained Jo In Sung.
Jo In Sung supports new actors filling spots for romance dramas. Projects in this genre have many fans and successfully touch the hearts of the audience.
"Now many young actors are emerging. The entertainment industry is indeed tough, but they keep moving forward. After all, don't many stars emerge through romance projects? I feel I am no longer in that phase. Let the young actors take those roles and touch the hearts of the audience, especially those who love romantic stories," he added.
Jo In Sung also shows a more mature perspective. He emphasizes, "It doesn't mean that romance is trivial. I believe each has its own role. My goal now is to showcase various sides of humanity while reflecting the times through the characters I portray."
