Lee Sungmin's career as an idol began with the SM YOUTH BEST CONTEST in 2001. At that time, he and Donghae were in first place for the Best Appearance award. They eventually became official trainees of SM Entertainment by signing contracts and receiving training in dancing, singing, and acting.
In 2002, Lee Sungmin, Junsu, and Eunhyuk made their debut on television as an R&B group. However, the group did not continue and its members separated into various other groups. Sungmin and Eunhyuk then joined 10 other trainees and debuted as Super Junior in November 2005.
They performed their first single titled Twins (Knock Out) on the music program SBS INKIGAYO. Two years after their debut, in February 2007, Sungmin joined the sub-group Super Junior-T, which specializes in singing South Korean music. I think I should communicate more with the fans to avoid misunderstandings," Sungmin wrote.
"When I was in the military, I hoped to return soon and join Super Junior. As a member of Super Junior, I hope Super Junior can continue to receive love from you. So, I decided not to appear with them. This is all to avoid controversy. This is the best decision. I apologize. I hope Super Junior can fully perform with their new work," Sungmin added.

Talking about Lee Sungmin's career journey, we cannot overlook his acting abilities. In fact, he debuted as an actor in 2005 before debuting with Super Junior. At that time, he played the role of Kang Dong shin, the teenage version, in the MBC drama SISTERS OF THE SEA.
After that, in 2009, Lee Sungmin also debuted as a musical theater actor in AKILLA and played the lead role as Ro. In the following year, 2010, Sungmin once again played the lead role as Hong Gil Dong in the musical theater of the same title. Furthermore, Lee Sungmin appeared in the KBS drama PRESIDENT as Jang Sungmin, the ambitious son of the president.
