These K-pop Idols Became Stars in South Korean Indie Films, What About Your Bias?

An independent film or indie film is a film or short film that is mostly made outside of major film studios, and is also produced and distributed by independent film studios, although sometimes these studios are subsidiaries of major studios.

The entertainment industry in South Korea seems to never run out of producing diverse and varied works. The people in this industry also have extraordinary talent. One of them is actors and actresses who star in films and dramas in Korea that often become hits worldwide. Not only from actors or actresses, sometimes, these films and dramas are also starred by K-pop idols who also have acting skills. 

If we see K-pop idols starring or playing roles in films and dramas in Korea, it might already be common and quite often found. However, what about indie films? It turns out that there are K-pop idols who also starred in indie films in South Korea that are also popular. Some of these K-pop idols are:

1. Yuri Girls Generation - Dolphin (2021)

K-pop idol who stars in the latest indie film is Yuri Girls Generation. Yuri Girls Generation is rumored to star in an indie film titled DOLPHIN in which she plays a role. This indie film marks her comeback to the big screen.

Previously, Yuri Girls Generation successfully appeared in a popular Korean drama, BOSSAM: STEAL THE FATE. In this indie film, Yuri Girls Generation portrays Nayoung, a local newspaper reporter who falls in love with bowling. Although it has not been released yet, this film is also highly anticipated by KLovers!

2. Jinyoung GOT7 - A Stray Goat (2017)

Next idol k-pop is a handsome singer who is a member of the boy group GOT7, namely Jinyoung GOT7. Just like Yuri, Jinyoung GOT7 also played the lead role in one of South Korea's indie films, A STRAY GOAT, which was released on March 1, 2017.

Jinyoung GOT7 played Min Sik in this film, who is a teenager from a religious family. He and his family just moved to the village of Goseong and entered a new school. As a new student and not as religious as his parents, Min-sik falls in with the wrong crowd, a group of delinquent kids. This film is his first starring role. He also feels that acting in this film reminds him of when he first became a trainee at JYP Entertainment.

3. Suho EXO - One Way Trip (2016)

One year before Jinyoung GOT7 starred in his indie film, Suho EXO was also chosen to play a role in the indie film titled ONE WAY TRIP. The film, which was released on March 24, 2016, had actually been screened before in 2015, specifically in October 2015 at the 20th Busan International Film Festival.

In this film, Suho EXO portrays one of the four young men who are the main characters in the film, namely Sang Woo. The film tells the story of four young men who are in their twenties and are on a journey to accompany Sang Woo in fulfilling his mandatory military service. During the journey, they get involved in an incident that will change their lives forever.

4. Minju IZ*ONE -The Fault Is Not Your (2019)

Unlike some previous K-pop idols, this K-pop idol becomes a supporting actor in the indie film that she stars in. The K-pop idol is Minju IZ*ONE who plays in the 2019 indie film called THE FAULT IS NOT YOUR.

This film tells the story of a teacher who feels guilty for the suicide of a student and struggles to become a good teacher for the students in his class. The teacher feels responsible for what his student has done. In this film, Minju IZ*ONE plays as Soo Yeon.

5. Hyeri Girls Day - My Punch-Drunk Boxer (2019)

In the same year as Minju, Hyeri Girls Day also starred in a South Korean indie film in 2019, called MY PUNCH-DRUNK BOXER. In this film, Hyeri plays the main character who helps Um Tae Goo in facing his career issues as a boxer.

This film about boxing is starred by Um Tae Goo as Byeong Goo and Hyeri who portrays the character Min Ji, who has dedication to continue Byeong Goo's boxing career which had to be stopped due to a disorder caused by an accident in his last match. This film, directed by Jung Hyuk Ki, was released on October 9, 2019.
