Four Favorite Indonesian Guitarists of Eross Candra

Who would have thought that behind Eross Candra's success as a top Indonesian guitarist lies a list of legendary musicians who have inspired him. The lead guitarist of the band Sheila On 7 openly reveals who the "Top Four" local guitarists are that have most influenced his career journey to date.

Eross explains that his musical inspiration is divided into two aspects: stage style and technical ability. For Eross, a guitarist's performance on stage is crucial before delving into the complexities of sound.

"If the first one is definitely Om Ian Antono, because he inspired me to learn the technical aspects, but he also inspired me for style. That is the most important thing. So I learned guitar style first before learning the technical aspects," said Eross Candra during an interview with Kapanlagi.com reporter on Thursday (16/4/2026).

In addition to the legendary figure Ian Antono with God Bless, Eross also mentioned three other big names. Interestingly, one of those names, Dewa Budjana, played a significant role in the financial history of the formation of Sheila On 7 in its early days.

Eross reminisces about the times he and his friends often participated in music competitions. Thanks to learning songs from the band Gigi, Sheila On 7 was finally able to have the capital to enter the recording studio for the first time."As for the technical aspects, I was greatly inspired by Piyu, and then there was Mas Dewa Budjana. We often performed Gigi's songs and won festivals because Gigi's songs are quite difficult," he said.

"So Sheila On 7 was helped by Gigi's songs because they won the festival, and the money could be used to make a demo to create their own songs. Yes, I also brought Mas Andra's songs from Dewa. That's the top four," he continued.

On the other hand, Eross also provided important tips for anyone who wants to seriously pursue the world of guitar. According to him, choosing a guitar is not about trends or the luxury of a brand, but rather about comfort when the instrument touches your body.

"Okay, a guitar is something that directly interacts with your body. So there's no theory that just because it suits me, it will definitely suit you. Not necessarily. So everything must be tried, don't just look at the brand. If it suits you, you like it, then that's your match," said Eross.

Although he loves his world very much, Eross has a unique side regarding his collection items. He chooses to keep the number of his guitars a mystery because he is reluctant to feel burdened by the many instruments he owns."Thank God I don't count them. If I count them, I will be anxious, so I don't count them," he concluded.
