One of the surprises came from Doechii, a talented rapper from Tampa, Florida, who made history by winning the Best Rap Album award at the 2025 Grammy Awards for her mixtape, ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL. This victory makes her the third woman to receive this award since the category was introduced in 1996.

Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon, better known by her stage name Doechii, is a rapper, singer, and songwriter from Tampa, Florida, United States. Born on August 14, 1998, Doechii began showcasing her talent in the performing arts at an early age, including ballet, tap dancing, acting, cheerleading, gymnastics, and soccer.

Before being recognized as a hip-hop star, Doechii started her career as a YouTuber, sharing videos about her music and lifestyle. Her creativity from a young age led her into a broader world of the arts. Her music career began with releasing music on SoundCloud in 2016 under the alias Iamdoechii. However, she gained widespread recognition after releasing her independent EP, OH THE PLACES YOU'LL GO in 2020. The song Yucky Blucky Fruitcake from the EP went viral on TikTok in 2021, paving the way for further success.

In 2022, Doechii signed a contract with Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records, then released her debut EP under the label titled SHE / HER / BLACK B***H.

The single What It Is (Block Boy) featuring Kodak Black was released in 2023, marking her debut on the Billboard Hot 100 and receiving platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Her third mixtape, ALLIGATOR BITES NEVER HEAL released in 2024, received critical acclaim and won the Best Rap Album award at the 67th Grammy Awards, making her the third female rapper to win that category after Cardi B (2019) & Lauryn Hill (1999).

Doechii also received nominations for Best New Artist & Best Rap Performance at the 2025 Grammy Awards. However, both awards were won by Chapelle Roan in the Best New Artist category and Best Rap Performance was awarded to Kendrick Lamar for the single Not Like Us.
