Kapanlagi.com - Custom medicines are now increasingly circulating in various places, from small shops to e-commerce platforms. These medicines are sold in simple packaging, often just wrapped in plastic without official labels, claiming to cure various diseases. However, behind the ease of access lies a danger that threatens our health.
The Food and Drug Supervisory Agency (BPOM) has issued a stern warning regarding the consumption of custom medicines. Not only are these illegal and unlicensed, but they often contain harmful substances that can endanger health. The risks posed are very serious, ranging from organ dysfunction to the potential for death.
BPOM continues to strive to educate the public through various channels, including their official Instagram, to stop the use of custom medicines. In a report summarized by Kapanlagi.com on Wednesday (15/1/2025), we will discuss what custom medicines are, why they are so dangerous, and the steps that can be taken to protect oneself from the lurking health risks.
Setelan medicine, often found in simple packaging such as small plastic containers or strips, harbors potential dangers that threaten our health.
Inside, there may be various tablets or capsules claimed to address a range of ailments; however, unfortunately, the packaging does not include important information such as the name of the medicine, ingredients, batch number, expiration date, or usage instructions.
This leaves consumers trapped in uncertainty about what they are consuming, and in many cases, these setelan medicines contain a mix of strong drugs that should only be used with a doctor's prescription.
Their rampant sale in stalls, traditional markets, or online platforms without adequate supervision indicates that the distribution of these medicines has expanded despite being illegal. The BPOM also warns that unregistered medicines should not be used as their safety is not guaranteed.
“Based on reports received by BPOM, throughout 2024 there have been 99 cases of setelan medicines. This number only reflects those reported; it is very likely that the actual number is much higher,” said a BPOM representative in an Instagram reel @cegatangkal.bpom on Friday (3/1/2025).
BPOM revealed three main reasons why unregulated medicines can pose a serious threat to our health. First, these medicines do not have official packaging from the pharmaceutical industry, so their quality is not guaranteed and they may contain harmful substances.
Second, important information such as dosage, indications, and side effects are often not included, making consumers unaware of what they are consuming, which could potentially lead to overdose or life-threatening allergic reactions.
Lastly, many of these unregulated medicines actually fall under the category of hard drugs that should only be used under medical supervision, but without medical guidance, the risk of health issues such as liver or kidney damage increases.
BPOM continuously reminds the public through various channels, including social media like Instagram, with the engaging campaign "Cek KLIK" which invites us to ensure the safety of the medicines we use.
With this simple step, we are taught to check the packaging, labels, distribution permits, and expiration dates before purchasing. BPOM also emphasizes the importance of buying medicines only from pharmacies or official health facilities, as using unlicensed medicines can pose greater health risks than benefits.
If you encounter over-the-counter medicines being sold without a license, report it immediately through HALOBPOM at 1500533. Through these educational efforts, BPOM hopes the public becomes increasingly aware of the importance of choosing safe and quality medicines, while collaborating with the police to take strict action against illegal medicine sellers.
The consumption of over-the-counter drugs poses hidden dangers to our health, both in the short and long term. In an instant, we may experience allergic reactions, poisoning, or digestive disorders characterized by nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.
However, the threats do not stop there; in the long run, some of these drugs may contain harmful active ingredients that damage vital organs such as the liver and kidneys. Even worse, using drugs without medical supervision can lead to antibiotic resistance, making the treatment of certain diseases increasingly difficult.
Therefore, BPOM reminds us not to hesitate to stop using over-the-counter drugs and to always consult with medical professionals before consuming any medication, especially for chronic or serious illnesses.
If you find over-the-counter setelan medicine being sold, do not hesitate to report it to the authorities! BPOM is ready to receive reports through HALOBPOM or the nearest BPOM office. Any information you provide could be the key for them to take action against illegal drug sellers.
Additionally, it is also important to educate those around you about the dangers of these setelan drugs. Inform them about the health risks that lurk and how crucial it is to purchase medication from trusted sources.
By raising public awareness, we can collectively distance ourselves from the threats of consuming dangerous drugs. And don't forget, always practice the "Cek KLIK" habit when buying medicine: ensure the packaging is intact, the label is clear, it has BPOM distribution permission, and it is not expired.
BPOM distribution permission is the official approval from BPOM that guarantees the safety, efficacy, and quality of a drug or food product.
Strong medications have a high risk of side effects if not used according to the doctor's recommendations. Therefore, their use must be supervised by medical personnel.
You can report it through HALOBPOM 1500533 or visit the nearest BPOM office.
