Kapanlagi.com - Breast cancer, a disease that develops in breast tissue, is a major concern in Indonesia. Although it more commonly affects women, men are also not exempt from this threat.

Based on data from Globocan 2022, breast cancer ranks as the most frequently experienced type of cancer in the country. With the high number of cases, a big question arises: what are the causes?

General surgery oncologist consultant, Bajuadji, explains that to date, the exact cause of breast cancer is still not fully understood. "However, there are several risk factors that can increase the likelihood of someone developing breast cancer," says Bajudadji, who practices at Bethsaida Hospital.

1. Why is Breast Cancer Screening Important?

Bajuadji emphasizes that a diagnosis of breast cancer does not mean the end of everything.

He reveals that the sooner cancer is detected, the greater the chance of recovery.

Therefore, he reminds us of the importance of performing self-breast examinations (SADARI) and undergoing regular medical check-ups. "Early detection is the key to managing breast cancer.

By conducting routine screenings such as mammograms and breast ultrasounds, we can detect cancer at an early stage, which certainly increases the chances of recovery," Bajuadji asserts.

2. Risk Factors for Breast Cancer

Here are some risk factors to be aware of:

1. Genetic Factors: Mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes can increase risk.

2. Family History: If there are family members who have had breast cancer, the risk also increases.

3. Age: The risk of breast cancer tends to increase with age, especially after 50 years.

4. Hormones: Prolonged exposure to high levels of estrogen, such as early menstruation, late menopause, or long-term hormone therapy, can be triggers.

5. Lifestyle: Factors such as obesity, excessive alcohol consumption, lack of physical activity, and smoking habits also contribute.

6. Radiation Exposure: Particularly risky for individuals exposed to radiation from a young age.

It is important for us to be more vigilant and understand these factors so that we can take appropriate preventive measures. Breast health is our shared responsibility!

3. Stage III Breast Cancer Treatment

Bajuadji explained that when the tumor reaches a size of 4-6 cm and has spread to the lymph nodes or surrounding tissues, the patient is diagnosed with stage III breast cancer.

At this stage, the treatments offered include chemotherapy, radiation, and mastectomy, with a recovery rate ranging from 40-60%.

However, if the cancer has entered stage IV, meaning it has spread to other organs such as the lungs, liver, bones, and brain, then the management becomes more complex with chemotherapy and radiation, as well as treatment tailored to the patient's condition, with a recovery rate of only 20-30%.

"Each patient has a unique condition, so it is important to consult with a specialist doctor to ensure that the therapy provided is targeted according to the stage and characteristics of the disease," added Bajuadji.
