Indonesian Team Wins Snow Sculpture Festival in Harbin, Despite Coming from a Tropical Country and Training in an Ice Cabinet

Kapanlagi.com - Exciting news comes from the Indonesian ice carving team who competed in the Harbin International Snow Sculpture Competition held on January 10 - 13, 2020 in Harbin, China. Two teams from the homeland, namely Indonesian Team 1 and Indonesian Team 2, managed to return home with victories.

I Nyoman Sungada, I Putu Andre Putra Yoga, Eka Budi Ariadee, and I Made Sumerta Yasa, who are members of Indonesian Team 1, carved a statue of Balinese Bride and won the Best Skill category. Meanwhile, Indonesian Team 2, led by I Ketut Suaryana, I Made Mardiawan, I Komang Karim, and I Kadek Arya Undiyana, carved a statue of Frog Surfing and won the Excellent category.

1. Surviving in Cold Air

Competing in snow sculpting competitions is not the first time that Indonesia Team 1 and 2 have participated. They have collaborated several times to participate in similar competitions in various countries.

Although Indonesia does not have snow, these sculptors from Bali can showcase their best abilities. Sharing tasks and understanding each other's characters are the keys to their victory in this competition.

"Chemistry is already there. We just need to align our vision and strategy. Because the blocks are big. So we make small miniatures from cork. We work on it directly from the side. So it's like making stairs to slowly climb up," said I Ketut Suaryana as quoted from Kompas.com.

2. Training in the Refrigerator

Before leaving for Harbin, Indonesia Team 1 and 2 trained together for one month. In addition to using cork, they also trained inside a refrigerator to learn how to deal with cold temperatures.

"We prepared mentally and physically inside the refrigerator for a whole day because we have to be in the best physical condition when competing," said I Nyoman Sungada as quoted from TheJakartaPost.com.

3. Exhibited Until February 25

This competition took place from January 10th to 13th and the sculptors were given 3.5 days to complete their works. After the competition, the snow sculptures they made will be exhibited to the public until February 25th.

In addition to participants from 10 countries, tourists from various continents also come to this festival. This is what makes Team Indonesia 1 and 2 intentionally bring the theme of Bali and Surfing to introduce the culture of this country.
