If examined etymologically or the origin of the word, the term Isra Miraj consists of two words, namely "Isra" and "Miraj". Therefore, to know the meaning of Isra Miraj in language, we can explain the meaning of these two words.

The meaning of Isra is the journey taken by Prophet Muhammad SAW from Masjidil Haram in Mecca to Masjidil Aqsa in Jerusalem (Palestine). Meanwhile, the meaning of Miraj is the journey of Prophet Muhammad SAW to the seventh heaven or Sidratul Muntaha using Buraq.

As previously explained, the meaning of Isra Miraj contains the understanding of the journey of Prophet Muhammad to the seventh heaven in one night. Rationally, this is something beyond logic. However, it is a real thing and has been explained in the Quran.

In the Quran, the meaning of Isra Miraj has also been explained. Among them is in the Quran, Al-Isra verse 1, which roughly translates as follows.

"Glory to Allah, who did take His servant for a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose precincts We did bless,- in order that We might show him some of Our Signs: for He is the One Who heareth and seeth (all things)."- (QS.Al-Isra: 1)

2. The Story of Prophet's Journey during Isra Miraj

Through the Quran, Al-Isra verse 1 has briefly explained how the Isra Miraj event occurred. To complete the understanding of the meaning of Isra Miraj, of course, Muslims need to know the whole story. Here is a summary of the story of Prophet Muhammad's journey during the Isra Miraj event:

One night, the angel Jibril came to visit Prophet Muhammad. Jibril then delivered a message from Allah SWT, for the Prophet to perform Isra Miraj. The Prophet, together with Jibril and Mikhail, then rode on Buraq, which would be used as a mount to Sidratul Muntaha. In a hadith, the appearance of Buraq is described as follows:

"From Anas ibn Malik, that the Prophet Muhammad once said as follows: Buraq was brought to me, a white animal; its body was taller than a donkey, but lower than a mule. It placed its front legs on the edge of its vision. I rode it and Jibril led me to Baitul Muqaddas. Then I tied the animal in the circle where the prophets usually tie their mounts. I entered the mosque and performed two rak'ahs inside, after which I left."

However, before reaching the seventh heaven or Sidratul Muntaha, Prophet Muhammad first went to Masjidil Aqsa. In addition, Jibril also invited the Prophet to pray in several places such as Tayyibah (Madinah Al Munawwarah), Madyan (the place where Prophet Musa AS took shelter when pursued by Pharaoh), Thursina (the place where Prophet Musa received Allah's revelation), and Bethlehem or Bait Al Lahm (the place of birth of Prophet Isa).

Next, Prophet Muhammad and Jibril also went to Baitul Maqdis and were welcomed by Prophet Ibrahim, Prophet Musa, Prophet Isa, and other prophets. Prophet Muhammad and the prophets then performed congregational prayer, with Prophet Muhammad as the imam.

From Masjidil Aqsa, Prophet Muhammad SAW went to the seventh heaven. Before arriving at the seventh heaven, Prophet Muhammad met the Prophets at each layer of heaven. Prophet Muhammad met Prophet Adam in the first heaven, Prophet Isa in the second heaven, Prophet Yusuf in the third heaven, Prophet Idris in the fourth heaven, Prophet Harun in the fifth heaven, and Prophet Musa in the sixth heaven.

Finally, in the seventh heaven, Prophet Muhammad met Prophet Ibrahim. Prophet Ibrahim invited Prophet Muhammad to meet Allah SWT and receive the revelation of prayer. At first, Prophet Muhammad was commanded to make prayer obligatory 50 times a day to him and his people.

Prophet Muhammad then descended from Sidratul Muntaha. On the way, he met Prophet Musa. Prophet Musa advised Prophet Muhammad to ask for leniency.

Prophet Muhammad, remembering his people, then returned to Sidratul Muntaha and negotiated with Allah SWT. Until finally, now Muslims are required to pray only five times a day.
