In the province known as the Veranda of Mecca, there is a unique tradition that has been preserved until now, namely Meugang. It is not just an ordinary celebration; Meugang holds deep meaning for the Acehnese community.
This tradition is carried out by slaughtering animals and cooking meat to be shared with family, relatives, and even distributed to those in need. Meugang is not only celebrated during Eid al-Fitr but also before Ramadan and Eid al-Adha. Its presence seems to symbolize togetherness and gratitude for the Acehnese people.
Meugang is part of Acehnese culture that has been passed down through generations. This tradition has a strong social meaning as it teaches us to share.
Meugang is not a new tradition. Its historical traces can be traced back to the Aceh Darussalam Kingdom in the 14th century AD. At that time, Sultan Iskandar Muda initiated this tradition as a form of gratitude by distributing meat to his people.
It is mentioned in the book about the Aceh Kingdom during the reign of Sultan Iskandar Muda that during the kingdom era, Sultan Iskandar Muda would slaughter cows and buffaloes in large numbers, then distribute them for free to the people as a form of concern for the community.
However, after the Dutch conquered Aceh in 1873, the kingdom's role in organizing Meugang came to a halt. Nevertheless, the community has continued to uphold this tradition independently until now, making it an inseparable part of Acehnese culture.
The Meugang tradition begins a few days before Eid or other Islamic holidays. At that time, the markets in Aceh will be crowded with residents hunting for beef, goat, chicken, or duck. The price of meat skyrockets to twice the usual price due to high demand.
After obtaining the meat, the Acehnese people will process it into various traditional dishes. Each region in Aceh has its own unique Meugang menu. For example, in North Aceh, the meat is usually cooked into curry and soup, while in Aceh Besar it is known for sie reuboh, rendang, and daging asam keueung.
Once the dishes are ready, the extended family will gather to enjoy the meal together. Not only that, but the meat is also often distributed to neighbors, the poor, and orphans as a form of social concern.
More than just eating meat, Meugang holds a deeper meaning for the Acehnese community. This tradition instills values of togetherness, social concern, and respect for holy Islamic days.
In Acehnese culture, a male son-in-law who still lives in his in-laws' house is required to bring meat on Meugang day. The more meat he brings, the higher his status in the eyes of his in-laws. This indicates that Meugang is also related to self-esteem and social status within the Acehnese society.
On the other hand, Meugang also has religious value. Helping others by sharing food during Meugang is considered a form of charity and a manifestation of gratitude for the blessings given by Allah.
Every time Meugang approaches, the markets in Aceh experience a surge in meat prices. If on regular days the price of beef is around Rp130 thousand per kilogram, during Meugang it can reach Rp250 thousand per kilogram or more.
This phenomenon drives significant economic circulation in a short period. Meat traders make substantial profits, while farmers also have greater opportunities to sell their livestock at higher prices.
However, on the other hand, this price increase also poses a challenge for the lower-middle class community. Many families have to set aside money well in advance to still be able to buy meat to celebrate Meugang properly.
Although it has been ongoing for hundreds of years, the Meugang tradition remains relevant to this day. However, in practice, some aspects have changed. In the past, Meugang was synonymous with the distribution of free meat by the kingdom, while now the community must purchase their own meat to celebrate it.
Additionally, modern lifestyles also influence how the Acehnese people celebrate Meugang. Some families choose to cook at home, while others prefer to dine together at restaurants or eateries that offer special Meugang menus.
Despite the changes that have occurred, the essence of Meugang remains the same: welcoming the holy day with gratitude and togetherness.
