MUI Will Issue a Haram Fatwa If Netflix Is Proven to Have Negative Content

Kapanlagi.com - The storm attacking Netflix in Indonesia is not over yet. Problems with the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (Kominfo) and licensing are not resolved, and now there is a warning from the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).

They are ready to issue a haram fatwa for Netflix if they find any negative content on this platform. Negative content here refers to content that is not in accordance with the legal and religious norms in Indonesia.

This was stated by the Chairman of the MUI Fatwa Council, Hasanuddin, yesterday, Wednesday (22/1). As reported by Tempo.co, Hasanuddin revealed that recently digital platforms and social media are easily infiltrated by negative content, including Netflix.

1. Declare Haram If...

Hasanuddin revealed that MUI is ready to issue a fatwa declaring haram to protect the community from the onslaught of negative content. If they later find it on Netflix, then a fatwa declaring haram can be issued.

"However, if there are members of the community who object to Netflix's service and need a fatwa, MUI will immediately study it and decide in a plenary session of the MUI fatwa. Issuing a fatwa against negative content on Netflix does not require much time," he said.

2. Need Community Reports

To issue a fatwa declaring haram, MUI requires reports from the community. If someone reports, finds negative content such as deviant sexual behavior, violence, pornography, and terrorism on this platform, MUI can directly issue a fatwa.

But so far, there have been no reports from the community received by MUI regarding Netflix. However, with the fatwa already in place regarding prohibited negative content, MUI can immediately issue a fatwa after receiving a report.
