In 2023, as part of the annual ONE PIECE Day event in Japan, it was announced that the prequel story of ONE PIECE, MONSTERS, will be adapted into an anime titled MONSTERS: 103 MERCIES DRAGON DAMNATION. MONSTERS is considered highly reputable among all the stories before ONE PIECE by Eiichiro Oda, so fans will be delighted to see this story receive proper recognition. After the official announcement, not much was discussed about MONSTERS: 103 MERCIES DRAGON DAMNATION. However, that changed when the first official trailer was released on YouTube and confirmed the release date on January 22nd.

One of the main attractions of Monsters is its status as a prequel to One Piece. The main protagonist of Monsters is Ryuma, and Eiichiro Oda confirmed that the Ryuma who appears as a zombie in the Thriller Bark arc is the same Ryuma from Monsters.
