In every worship, especially in the teachings of Islam, there are several things that must be known and understood before proceeding to the procedures, namely the obligatory conditions and the valid conditions. Conditions are important because they will determine the value of the worship performed. The following are the obligatory conditions in Friday prayer.
- Islam
The first obligatory condition is that a person performing Friday prayer must be a Muslim.
- Baligh
The second obligatory condition to perform Friday prayer is to have reached the age of maturity. Maturity is marked by the ability to distinguish between good and bad.
- Sane
A person who is obligated to perform Friday prayer is someone who must be sane, not mentally ill or unconscious.
- Free
The next obligatory condition for Friday prayer is to be free and not in a state of slavery.
- Healthy
If a Muslim man is sick, then his obligation to perform Friday prayer is lifted. However, he is still obligated to perform the Dhuhr prayer as usual.
- Settled or Resident
Meaning, if a Muslim man is traveling, he is not obligated to perform Friday prayer. However, similar to when he is sick, he still has to establish the Dhuhr prayer as usual.
In addition to the obligatory conditions, Friday prayer also has valid conditions that must be fulfilled when performing the Friday prayer. The valid conditions will determine whether the Friday prayer is accepted or not. Here are the valid conditions for Friday prayer:
- It is performed on Friday when entering the Dhuhr time.
- Friday prayer is performed in congregation (minimum 40 people) within a community, such as a village, city, and so on.
- Each congregant of Friday prayer must fulfill the obligatory conditions for Friday prayer as mentioned earlier.
- Before performing the two units of prayer, it is preceded by two sermons and also reciting the pillars of the sermon.
- Friday prayer is performed after the preacher finishes delivering two sermons.

Friday prayer can be said to be one of the special prayers. Not only because it is done at certain times and only required for Muslim men. Friday prayer is also special because the procedure for Friday prayer is slightly different from regular prayers.
The difference lies in the presence of a preacher who delivers a sermon. Allegedly, the sermon delivered in two parts replaces the first two rak'ahs in the Dhuhr prayer. Thus, Friday prayer, which is performed after the preacher finishes the sermon, is carried out in two rak'ahs with the usual prayer procedure.
Here is the procedure for Friday prayer, summarized from various sources.
1) Reciting the Intention
- Intention for the Imam:
USHALLI FARDAL JUM'ATI ADA'AN MUSTAQBILAL QIBLATI IMAMAN LILLAHI TA'ALA.
Meaning: I intend to perform Friday prayer, 2 rak'ahs, facing the qiblah, as the imam for the sake of Allah Ta'ala.
- Intention for the Congregation (Makmum):
USHALLI FARDAL JUM'ATI ADA'AN MUSTAQBILAL QIBLATI MAKMUMAN LILLAHI TA'ALA.
Meaning: I intend to perform Friday prayer, 2 rak'ahs, facing the qiblah, as a congregation for the sake of Allah Ta'ala.
2) Takbiratul Ikhram
3) Reciting the Opening Supplication
4) Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah
5) Reciting a short surah, followed by takbir
6) Bowing (Rukuk)
7) Standing up straight after bowing, followed by takbir
8) First Prostration
9) Sitting between the two prostrations
10) Second Prostration
11) Standing up to perform the second rak'ah
12) Reciting Surah Al-Fatihah
13) Reciting a short surah, followed by takbir
14) Bowing (Rukuk)
15) Standing up straight after bowing
16) First Prostration
17) Sitting between the two prostrations
18) Second Prostration
19) Final Tashahhud
20) Salam
That is the procedure for Friday prayer movements. As for recitations, except for the intention recitation, all are the same as the recitations during performing obligatory prayers or other voluntary prayers.
Not only the reward of Friday prayers, when performing this worship, male Muslims also have the opportunity to earn additional rewards by performing sunnah. There are several sunnahs of Friday prayers, here are some of them:
1) Sunnahs Before Going to the Mosque
- Take a clean bath
- Trim nails and mustache
- Wear clean, neat clothes, and use fragrance
- Enter the mosque by reciting the prayer upon entering the mosque:
ALLAHUMMAF TAHLII ABWAABA ROHMATIK
Meaning: O Allah, open the doors of Your mercy for me.
2) Sunnahs while in the Mosque
- Perform the sunnah prayer of greeting the mosque
- Sit in itikaf (stay) while reciting the Quran, dhikr, or sending blessings upon the Prophet
- Stop reciting dhikr or other readings when the khateeb delivers the Friday sermon
- Perform the sunnah prayer after the Friday prayer is finished
Thus is the procedure for Friday prayers and its sunnahs that need to be known by Muslims, especially for males. Because Friday prayers have their own privileges and must be performed. So it is appropriate for Muslims, especially males, to know the ins and outs of this particular prayer.
