Survey Proves, Indonesian Netizens Crowned Most Impolite in Southeast Asia

Microsoft recently released its latest annual report by measuring the level of netizen or internet user civility with the title 2020 Digital Civility Index (DCI). It turns out that Indonesian netizens rank the lowest in terms of politeness in using social media.

1. Singapore Most Polite

The Netherlands ranks first as the most polite netizens globally. Meanwhile, in Southeast Asia, Singapore ranks first and fourth globally. Indonesia, on the other hand, ranks 29th out of 32 countries occupying the lowest position in Southeast Asia.

"This annual study of digital politeness is important to raise awareness and encourage positive online interactions," said Liz Thomas, Regional Digital Safety Lead, Asia-Pacific, Microsoft, as quoted from Mashable.

2. Survey Results for Indonesia

This survey conducted by Microsoft took place from April to May 2020 and involved 16,000 respondents from young and adult populations. Indonesia is considered to have an impolite attitude due to an increase in the DCI score, which includes a 13% increase in hoaxes and frauds, and a 5% increase in hate speech. However, discrimination has decreased by 2% as respondents have shown better politeness during the pandemic.
