Transgender in Indonesia Can Now Have ID Cards, Without Changing Any Status

Recently, transgender people, especially transgender women, can finally have ID cards. It is known that there are 30 transgender women who can finally obtain electronic ID cards (e-KTP) at the building owned by the South Tangerang Civil Registration and Population Office.

1. Without Changing Any Status

These trans women only need to bring their Family Card with their Population Identification Number (NIK) according to their initial gender. This e-KTP recording activity is a pilot project of the Ministry of Home Affairs.

"And it does not change any status. It does not change gender. So, it can be confirmed that the 30 genders are all male," said the Head of the Population and Civil Registration Office of Tangsel City, Dedi Budiawan, on Wednesday (2/6/2021), quoted from IDN Times.

2. No Discrimination

According to the Director General of Civil Registration of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Zudan Arif Fakhrullah, the situation will change after the government simplifies the process of making e-KTP for 297 trans women throughout Indonesia, according to the government's records.

"All Indonesian citizens must be served equally or non-discriminatory," said Zudan in his official statement, quoted from Vice.

In this e-KTP, there will be no transgender gender column. Instead, there will only be two options for gender, male or female.
