He passed away on Saturday, October 12, 2024, after his speedboat exploded on the beach of Bobong, Taliabu Barat, around 14:05 WIT. The deceased was heading to Kawalo Village, Taliabu Barat District to campaign with his team. As is known, the former Mayor of Morotai from 2017-2022 was running again in the 2024 Pilkada as the gubernatorial candidate for North Maluku alongside Sarbin Sehe. Benny Laos's wife, Sherly Tjoanda, who was part of the group, cried hysterically. She requested that whoever is elected as governor of Malut must pay more attention to health facilities. Not only that, photos circulated showing Sherly Tjo continuing to accompany her husband, who lay lifeless beside her.
