The long process in selecting the main cast for the film 'Mendadak Dangdut' finally brought Anya Geraldine to the leading role. Director Monty Tiwa experienced hesitation before ultimately deciding to cast Anya as Naya, the central character in the film.

The doubt arose not because of Anya's acting ability, but because the character Naya had to be able to sing dangdut. Monty felt Anya was the right choice, but initially, he was reluctant to invite the actress to join due to concerns about being rejected. /far

The selection of Anya only truly felt right when the reading process was almost complete. The director realized that the actress was actually very suitable for playing the character Naya, especially because she had the right vocal character and a strong personality.

"Because the title is Sudden Dangdut, we chose someone who is unlikely to sing dangdut. Anya was overlooked because she didn't fit in, even though she is the most suitable, and she is one of the most dangdut," said Monty at XXI Plaza Senayan, Central Jakarta, Wednesday (9/4/2025).

"At that time I was chatting with Keanu and then Keanu said there’s a really good project, Sudden Dangdut, and I said, hey I really want to do it. Finally, Keanu talked to Mr. Monty and we met at the office, chatted, and it connected, so it just went smoothly. Everything was smooth," said Anya Geraldine.

Although she was initially doubted to be able to sing dangdut, Anya actually found the preparation process very exciting. She underwent various vocal training, from indie songs to intensive training to sing dangdut in order to fully understand the character of Naya.

"To become Naya in this film, the preparation was quite a lot, but for me, it wasn't a difficulty because I enjoyed the preparation process. So, of course, to become the character Naya, the preparation involved singing indie songs, and when it comes to singing, I, as Anya, had previously learned to sing non-dangdut for about a year," she revealed.

"So the challenge now is that I have to sing; we are recording 6 dangdut songs and 1 indie song. So here, the challenge is that I have to learn to sing dangdut and other things. At first, I thought, can I do this? But I don't know why, I ended up enjoying it so much. Maybe because since I was little, my ears have been familiar with dangdut," she explained.

Even though she had never seriously sung dangdut before, practice after practice made her more confident. Anya felt comfortable performing those songs and even felt like she discovered a new side of herself in the process.
