8 Photos of DJ Winky Revealing the Beginning of His Love for Metal Music, Deceived by His Own Friend - Napalm Death Called a Boyband

“I’ve been listening to metal since elementary school because back in Bandung, I was a junior to Arian Seringai and Edy Khemod. Basically, I was around the metal pioneers of Bandung; when they first appeared, I was still in elementary school and I watched them,” Winky recounted.

According to him, metal music became something very synonymous with the spirit of Bandung kids at that time. Winky continued, in his era, Bandung kids seemed 'obligated' to listen to metal music. If not, those who did not listen to metal were often considered 'not masculine' or less macho. "And back then in Bandung, if you didn’t listen to metal, it was roughly like 'ah you, you don’t listen to (metal), you’re not manly' like that," he said.

However, Winky's journey into metal music actually began with a rather unique experience. Winky, who used to prefer listening to boyband songs like New Kids On The Block, was suddenly introduced by a friend to the extreme band, Napalm Death. His friend said that Napalm Death was a "boyband," which of course made Winky curious and interested in listening.

"I was once humorously tricked by Bimbo's child. Because I used to listen to New Kids On The Block. He said, 'Wink, do you want to listen to a boyband? There's this one called Napalm Death,'" he said.

When he first listened to the newly purchased Napalm Death cassette, Winky was quite surprised by the music, which was far from his expectations. "I bought the (cassette) Napalm Death, then I listened to it, and I was like, what is this? But at that time I was embarrassed, when I met again suddenly, I bought more death metal cassettes at Aquarius Bandung, so I intentionally memorized all of them," explained Winky. 

From his first experience listening to Napalm Death, Winky eventually became more immersed in the world of metal music. One moment that made him truly fall in love with metal was when he listened to the album Beneath the Remains by the band Sepultura.

"At first, I didn't really like it, you know, listening to that kind of music. But because I already had the cassette, every day I casually listened to (metal), and I finally fell in love with Sepultura's album Beneath the Remains," he said.

Now, DJ Winky is not only active as a DJ but also remains loyal to the metal music world he loves. He has three favorite metal bands that he believes should never disband, namely Killa the Phia, a metal band from Aceh that just performed at Wacken Open Air 2024, Slaughter to Prevail, and Architects.
