Ammar Zoni Refuses to Be Transferred Back to Nusa Kambangan, Lawyer Files Petition

The legal case involving Ammar Zoni continues to unfold and has entered a new chapter. After previously being detained at Nusa Kambangan Prison with a high-risk status, Ammar is now at Cipinang Prison to undergo trial proceedings at the Central Jakarta District Court. However, news of the plan to transfer Ammar back to Nusa Kambangan after the hearing has prompted a reaction from his legal team.

Jon Mathias, Ammar Zoni's lawyer, visited the Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) to file a petition so that his client would not be transferred back to Nusa Kambangan Prison. He believes that the transfer should be based on a legally binding decision, not merely an administrative plan.

"Yes, we came here to submit a letter of objection regarding the transfer of the defendant Ammar Zoni and his associates. What is the basis? Of course, the basis must respect the presumption of innocence, which is a principle of our criminal law," he said when met at the Directorate General of Corrections, Gambir area, Central Jakarta, Thursday (5/2/2026).

Ammar Zoni is known to be involved in a drug trafficking case in Salemba Prison, which led him to spend time in Nusa Kambangan with five other defendants. However, Jon Mathias emphasized that the allegations are still in the process of being proven in court and there has been no guilty verdict yet.

"Because Ammar is accused, right? The allegation is that he was transferred to Nusa Kambangan based on serious violations he committed by smuggling prohibited items. That is an allegation, and the process is handed over to the court," he explained.

Jon also complained about the lack of communication from the relevant parties regarding this relocation plan. He reflected on his previous experience when Ammar was suddenly transferred to Nusa Kambangan without any notification to the family or the legal team.

"Just like before when Ammar was transferred to Nusa Kambangan, the family was never informed about the reasons. Then we, the legal team, were also never informed; suddenly the transfer had already happened, right?" Jon expressed with a disappointed tone.

The legal team hopes that the Directorate General of Corrections can consider this request wisely. Jon desires transparency and justice for Ammar Zoni while the legal process is still ongoing, and rejects any transfer based solely on assumptions.

"Of course, there must be a decision first that states the legally binding verdict regarding the alleged violation. If not, then it must respect the presumption of innocence," asserted Jon Mathias.
