Ariel Tatum and Happy Salma Present Jaipongan Dance in 'Sukabumi 1980' Art Performance, Even Got Sprayed!

Titimangsa, together with Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation, successfully held an art performance titled 'Sukabumi 1980' at Selabintana Conference Resort, Sukabumi, West Java. The event, which took place on Friday, December 8, 2023, showcased Sundanese culture in the 80s.

Sukabumi in the 1980s was a time when art performances were often held in the midst of the local community. During that era, the community was familiar with traditional culture. Despite the light drizzle, it did not diminish the enthusiasm of the audience who attended.

Among the artists who attended this event, Ariel Tatum and Happy Salma performed a dance called Jaipong, specifically Adumanis. Their Jaipong performance was impressive and entertaining. Here is their graceful dance performance of Jaipong Adumanis.

In this art event, Ariel Tatum showcased her skills by performing Jaipong Adumanis dance with Happy Salma. For their performance, Ariel and Happy wore matching pink kebaya and yellow selendang designed by Didiet Maulana.

Despite not having Sundanese blood, the beautiful actress moved gracefully, following the karawitan accompaniment. Their performance amazed the audience and even received money shower from the fans.

During the event, Ariel expressed her relief in successfully performing the traditional Sundanese dance.

“I was really nervous, this is the first time, finally I performed traditional dance in front of a lot of people,” said Ariel Tatum. “Although I was nervous, this experience was very enjoyable, especially sharing it with my sister,” she continued.

Performing Jaipong was indeed the first time for the 1996-born actress. However, she has been practicing Javanese dance for a long time.

2. Dewi Gita's Performance, Kiara Anjar Candrakirana, and Dona Agnesia

In addition to the performances by Ariel Tatum and Happy Salma, Dewi Gita, Kiara Anjar Candrakirana, and Donna Agnesia also presented equally stunning performances. Dewi Gita and Kiara Anjar showcased their singing abilities.

Accompanied by the sound of gamelan, they successfully added excitement to 'Sukabumi 1980'. Not only that, Donna Agnesia's poetry collaboration brought its own value.

After showcasing her melodious voice, Dewi Gita returned to perform a Gandangan dance in Sundanese princess costume. The mother of one performed the Gandangan dance with masculinity.

3. As an Effort to Revive Sundanese Tradition

Guided by Merwan Meryaman and Jeni Aripin, who presented special performances by Ariel Tatum and Happy Salma, 'Sukabumi 1980' was also attended by Dewi Gita, Kiara Anjar Candrakirana, and Dona Agnesia. The three of them also delivered special performances, ranging from Kiara Anjar and Dewi Gita's nyinden to Dona Agnesia's poem about Sukabumi city.

Through the 'Sukabumi 1980' stage, Happy Salma tried to revive traditional arts and invited young people to participate in preserving Sundanese culture. 'In the 1980s, Sukabumi was one of the cities in West Java that was rich in and familiar with traditional arts. Various Sundanese cultures and arts such as degung, pencak silat, and Jaipong dance could be found in various community activities, schools, inauguration ceremonies, and celebrations. After moving to another city, there is a longing for the city that is the root of my life,' she said.

This performance presented dance, karawitan music, and sinden, and also featured local artists from Sanggar Seni Gapura Emas and Sanggar Gumintang. 'Sukabumi 1980', which is also supported by Bakti Budaya Djarum Foundation, hopes to have similar activities in other cities in the future.
